Ron Izalco 10 Year Old rum marries Central American rums produced from volcanic sugar cane molasses. The spirit is then aged in charred American oak casks for a whole decade, resulting in a complex and thoroughly delightful rum.
Fresh red chilli heat balanced by sweeter tropical flavours and citrus, alongside creamy caramel and fragrant honey, with a pinch of tobacco and a handful of raisins.
Bought as dram and left to sit in a drawer in my cabinet. The initial hit is a bit like Cut Overproof - bags of caramel and heat - but the sweetness rolls into the spices and the alcohol hit is smoother. This is a drink to enjoy on its own
We first tried Ron Izalco at a rum event in London a couple of years ago (before it had officially been released in the UK market) and remembered it as being a very pleasant surprise to taste. Flash forward a couple of years and we rediscovered the rum on this site and decided to buy a bottle. We were not disappointed! This is now our go-to premium rum. First off the bat, the smell is incredible - like demerara sugar when you first open the packet (sweet and almost the tiniest bit moist and musky). There's a little bit of cinnamon or ginger in there too. The taste is super smooth and silky, with a lovely sweetness that stays just the right side of sugary. The alcohol is certainly present and tempers the sweetness but it doesn't overpower the flavours or burn on the way down. Whether you like your rum neat or with ice (I like it a tiny bit above room temperature so that you get all the amazing flavours from the smell), this is a super easy-drinking rum that most definitely should not be mixed! The only negative I could say is that lockdown has been expensive, as we're on our fourth bottle of this!!!
