Here we having a slightly higher strength bottling of Doorly's awesome XO Rum, weighing in at 43% ABV. The lip-smacking blend of Barbados rums was finished in an Oloroso sherry cask before bottling, so there's a good helping of chocolate and spice among the tropical notes.
Dry oak and earthy vanilla pod, with cocoa, raisins and charred banana, with a dark treacle finish.
Think this is a great Rum for its price point. I would say it gives El Dorado 12 and Diplomatico Reservation a run for their money.
Very good value for money, but personally I would shell out an extra few pounds and buy a Cadenheads Single Cask rum from Venezuela or Belize. Or maybe a Foursquare at cask strength. This rum is lacking a bit of oomph for me. At 43% it’s a lot weaker than most rums I drink. The taste is great but the finish fades very quickly and it lacks a bit if depth. Other than that, for the money it’s good.
High quality rum with some complexity. Absolutely delicious on the rocks. Fairly priced for such quality compared to some of the more doctored yet less complex rums on the market. You cannot go wrong with this rum. Highly recommended!
I get toffee, glue, spice and sherry. The toffee and sherry add a nice counter balance to the oaky dryness. It's not particularly complex, and there is a bit of alcohol burn, but overall, it's tasty and moorish, well made and serious, and for the price, it's a bargain. Foursquare shows how tasty rum can be made without loads of sugar added.
Neat I find this bordering on disgusting, because it has no sweetness to it, has a rough alcohol burn, and tastes of tobacco in the aftertaste. Thankfully, for me at least, when mixed with Coca-Cola, Doorly’s XO does become sweeter and a tad more pleasant. Unfortunately though, however much coke you use, there is no escaping that dodgy, yucky aftertaste. Shame. My harsh criticism of this rum, can be attributed to one major, significant factor. And that is, Foursquare Rum Distillery, where Doorly’s is distilled and matured. Now of course I do know that Foursquare is not only one of the most revered distilleries in Barbados, but on this planet. But, every single bottle of rum that has been lovingly created at Foursquare, has had zero sugar added to it. Now for me, a rum drinker who favours the more sugary rums, like Plantation XO for example, well, you can see my obvious problems with it.
