A fantastic aged rum from the Doorly's range, featuring Bajan rum from the Foursquare Distillery which has enjoyed a second maturation in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks. This extra maturation imparts a wealth of fruit, dark chocolate and oaky spices to the rum's flavour profile, making this an excellent choice for sipping neat. Not only that, it's got a pretty good bird on the label. Bonus.
Sugarcane, Demerara sugar, meaty and rich. Over-ripe grape notes and spice.
Fresh flowers, oak, potpourri, cedar, honey, toffee apples.
Long, muscovado sugar and oak-led spices.

To compare this to Lamb's or Jerry is not useful since those rums are sweetened and, in the case of the Sailor, openly flavoured too. Doorly's rums are pure. No flavouring, no added sugar. Made in pot stills by an expert. You cannot really get any better quality: after that's it's just a matter of taste. Without added sugar, glycerine & so on, rums have heat. This is first rate rum with a slightly sweet opening, lovely caramel middle and dryer end with added complexity from the sherry casks (wood, dark fruits)
I'm more of a single malt guy, but am trying to expand my horizons a little. The sherry finish on this rum, along with some of its wood character is familiar, though the finish is clearly set apart from what I'm used to - it's spicy yet sweet. I really enjoy it.
the 1st reviewer must be used to bacardi and it's burn. I really like a mixed drink that doesn't have the alcohol burn. with Doorly's XO I just drop a couple ice cubes and sip it neat. it has a great flavor (not syrupy) and if you insist on slamming, it will get you drunk just as easily as the others. the last bottle i had lasted about a year. and i enjoyed and tasted every drop.
Need I say more?
I don't know what the other reviewer is on about - clearly he prefers sub-standard drams and is unable to detect subtle after-tastes. This rum is like drinking alcoholic caramel - it's fantastically smooth, slightly aromatic and leaves a rich and earthy aftertaste. Although cheaper than more classic rums like pussers, el dorado and mount gay it offers superb competition. So if you're on a tight budget I'd ignore Mr. Sailor Jerry up yonder and snatch up a bottle.
