All the way from Venezuela comes Diplomático Seleccion De Familia, a particularly deluxe expression made with rum drawn from American white oak, ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. The spirit itself was made using the gamut of stills available at the distillery, including the Scottish pot still, the Barbet French column still and the Canadian batch kettle still. Wonderfully rich and flavoursome, with lots of fruit and toffee notes to enjoy.
Honeyed forest fruits, gooey toffee, raisin and a touch of date. Very soft vanilla with the merest hint of oily orange peel.
First creamy, juicy plum set against a backdrop of coconut. Cooked oak spice and brandy ripple across the palate, chased down by rounded pepper and bold toffee sweetness.
Smooth, with thick notes of demerara sugar. Well-rounded, long finish with a hint of pipe tobacco on the tail.
I am a “casual” rum drinker - usually drink the £20-£30 bottles with Coke Zero as a mixer. This stuff is unbelievable; it is drinkable straight even for a novice like me - I have it after being in the fridge for a couple of days, just to sip. Not a bottle to drink to get drunk, but as a treat now and then or a nightcap it is ideal.
Been waiting to try this rum for a while as I am a big fan of the Diplomático exclusiva - My favourite rum. I have to say that the Seleccion De Familia has now taken the top spot. Like the Exclusiva, very easy to drink neat as its so smooth. The rum is sweet and has a nice spicy oak flavour too. The bottle now has a nice spot on my desk and will definitely be ordering more once its finished!
To drink straight this is much smoother than the diplomatico exclusiva, though I find the exclusiva better with a mixer and a smoke ,
Really lovely sipping rum. In the glass develops a lovely smokey oakiness on the nose. A cut above their Reserva Exclusiva.
