The first release from Scotland's Dark Matter Distillers is Dark Matter Spiced Rum - very exciting stuff! Created in Banchory by two brothers, Jim and John Ewen, Dark Matter Spiced Rum is a molasses-based rum that features full-bodied notes of long pepper, fresh ginger, green peppercorns and allspice.

I am still not sure about this! My favourite rum is lambs navy, I saw the Dark Matter bottle and was really interested to try this. I tried it neat, which was hot, spicy and very heavy on cloves (not my favourite spice) but I do love the gingery heat. So tried it next with coke, which tempered the cloves. I know what the other reviewer means about the marmite effect - I quite like that it isn't easy to drink, it makes it more interesting!!! I can imagine that it would be really good with some super hot fiery ginger wine/beer.
I've read the reviews & to be honest I'm not a rum snob. AFAIK spiced rums are meant to go with mixers, like coke. I like this with Bunderberg root beer (or coke). I like this flavour & it's nice to have a spiced rum that's different to the others. I also like Bacardi Fuego though this is slightly different. I get what others are saying but I find myself returning to this for it's unique spicy flavour. It's great as a winter warmer.
First time I saw this bottle I knew i'd have to try it. Hadn't read any reviews on it before I tried it so I was shocked when I took a mouthful. If ginger and cloves aren't your thing, give this a miss as it is VERY hot, like plenty of other reviews have stated, Morgans spiced this is not! It's 50 50 with my friends, one says it's his favourite, one says it's the worst he's ever tried so it has the marmite syndrome, love it or hate it. Personally I think it tastes amazing with coke, really delicious and I always want another one as soon as my glass is empty.
I read about this on a local Spirit's store website, tried it at my local Rum bar and was blown away. It is NOT a standard spiced rum. This is the only Rum made in Scotland and is far from the standard smooth vanilla flavors you may expect from a Spiced rum. I absolutely love this Rum though. It is just like Brown sugar and Ginger, it tingles for minutes afterwards and is unlike anything I've ever had. This will either be something you hate or you love. Hense all the 1 star or 5 star reviews. Love it or hate it though, there's nothing else like it and I went out and bought a bottle the next day I loved it so much. Try it before you judge from the reviews.
Ginger, hot pepper, ginger, non descript alcohol and huge overtones of ginger make this a rum that will not be to many people's taste. If you like Morgan's, Sailory Jerry or RedLeg types of spiced rum then you'll hate this stuff. For a previous reviewer to say it is good with ginger beer makes the mind boggle.
