The first release from Scotland's Dark Matter Distillers is Dark Matter Spiced Rum - very exciting stuff! Created in Banchory by two brothers, Jim and John Ewen, Dark Matter Spiced Rum is a molasses-based rum that features full-bodied notes of long pepper, fresh ginger, green peppercorns and allspice.

I tried this for the first time last night and absolutely loved it. We had it with some ginger beer and ice and the flavours were immense. Looking forward to my next drink already.
Someone told me this was a spiced rum. After trying and trying with it, I've come to the conclusion that "spiced" sets an expectation which this rum just can't live up to. It's a decent base rum but it's hidden under a lot of clove, so much so that I could taste it throughout the following day. It's OTT in a way that's not for everyone and the barrage of "spice" makes it seem a little industrial at first (that could also be partially due to the waft of young spirit you get on the nose). IMO it can't be tamed with a mixer - this just brings out even more clove - though if you have got a bottle and don't enjoy it, I imagine it would make an exceptional marinade for ham. In short, it's a divisive rum which is why people only seem to be giving it massive praise or trashing it. The truth is it's somewhere between the two in terms of quality, but I'd certainly recommend trying a sample before you buy.
Hands down the most disgusting drink I've had the misfortune to ever have. Tastes like it is intended as some kind of joke shot drunk only as student dares... like aftershock or fireball. Clearly the brothers have very little faith in their base rum add they've tried as hard as possible to stop you from tasting it. Overpowering cloves and black pepper and the ginger.... oh my god the ginger. Like distilled essence of fiery ginger beer. So disgusting, took a good quarter of an hour to get the awful taste out of my mouth. Why is the minimum score 0.5/5? Way more generous a score than I should like to give.
I happily try any rum. But,this one I have to say is terrible. Open the bottle it is not the smell of a good rum,can not decide what it was but it was not good and it got worse when I tried it,thought I was tasting a bunch of chemicals put together just to annoy people. Thumbs down ? for me.
It's the only thing more beautiful & more complicated than my wife!
