The first release from Scotland's Dark Matter Distillers is Dark Matter Spiced Rum - very exciting stuff! Created in Banchory by two brothers, Jim and John Ewen, Dark Matter Spiced Rum is a molasses-based rum that features full-bodied notes of long pepper, fresh ginger, green peppercorns and allspice.

Was in Dundee on business from London. Went into a small pub on a rainy night and asked for spiced rum with ginger ale, one ice cube. Honestly, the taste was unlike any other spiced rum...the spices come through wonderfully, with an intense beauty. After I had a straight double with one ice cube. And then another two. I was hooked. My friend and colleague also tried it and said. "man , this is a dangerous one...it's like a siren of the sea..she'll call you and pull you in". Truly some interesting engineering to produce a rum of this standard. I went and bought two bottles the next day. Fantastic.
I've just tasted this for the first time in my local jazz/music bar. I have always liked spiced rum and this is delicious but possibly only if you have a slightly sweet tooth and drink it straight with just a cube or 2 of ice to soften. I could happily have drunk it all night, but my husband would have had to have carried me home and I'm a bit too grown up for that now!
Was bought a bottle as a gift. Really don't know what to expect but I was thoroughly impressed. Initially very sweet, like a cola cube but quickly punches you in the face with a strong, spicy but very deep flavour. It has a smooth finish. Definitely drink it neat. Would highly recommend.
Picked up on a whim to satisfy the Rum madness, this fiery concoction immediately satisfied. Warming and smooth, with a rich depth of Nutmeg and Clove, an underlying fruitiness and a sayisfying moreish finish, this was exceptional taken straight or cut with the juice of half a lime. Will be revisiting!
A little too spicy for most rum drinkers, but very good indeed! I think I'll mix it with Trawler or Woods just to tone it down a bit but it'll be a sure thing for a special day!! Do they all have a connection with the North East?
