Dark Matter Spiced Rum Reviews

Fiery As Hell

I bought this Rum for £25, RRP £29, so off to a good start, having saved £4. But that’s where the good vibes ended with this rum because, wow, how much do I not like this! It’s so fiery it’s brutal! I’m not kidding when I say it made my lips burn and literally gave me heartburn when I drank this neat! To cut to the chase, drinking this without a mixer is akin to having a Vindaloo Curry, it’s that intense. But having said that, even with tonnes of ice and mixed with Coca-Cola it still remains too searing for me. At the end of the day it boils down to this. If you like ginger, pepper, cloves, I’m presuming all these spices have been used, then I recommend this Rum. However Dead Man’s Fingers black bottle is very similar to this, but is priced at only £22. Just saying.

Will order another bottle

Spicy and wintery. Yum. Easy to drink on it’s own. Great end of the night sipping drink.

27th June 2020

Not thrilled

Rum liqueurs will always be subjective, I can't say that I disliked it but it wouldn't be my first choice next time, you have to try it.

22nd June 2020

Loved it. Very warming

13th June 2020

Yeah.. Not my thing

I as several others have, really really wanted to enjoy this unique beauty but for me personally it just doesn't sit well on the tummy after a glass neat, the balance of cloves + ginger and magic of science tempted me from the get go but just not my thing sadly.

10th June 2020

What are all the spices used.

Bootiful give me more. Very warming. Great neat. Nice with ice. Enjoyable with coconut ice.

15th May 2020

A really lovely rum

Our new go-to! Fantastic flavour.

17th April 2020

The Perfect Isolation Companion

A bottle of Dark Matter...mixed with ginger ale, a slice of lime...along with some ice...Perfect....
but...not to be taken neat though...I did...I spewed my guts out.

13th April 2020

Don't be put off - try it

I felt compelled to leave a review for Dark Matter after reading some reviews in here. It's my favourite spiced rum by far! It reminds me of Christmas - yes clove, but don't be put off for those non-clove lovers, but also ginger and warmth. In Wales we would say that it's like a Cwtch (hug). Drink it neat of course but goes so well with ginger ale and diet pepsi (rather than coke). Don't be put off by the mixed reviews, this is a high quality rum which feels like it's been prepared with a true love for the drink. Delicious.

30th March 2020

Clovey goodness

Was bought this as a Christmas present and I wasn’t too keen at first taste but the further I get through the bottle the more it grows on me, now half way through the bottle and I’d certainly buy this again. Stronger to the taste (not %) than some of my other normal rums but still goes down smooth, a very strong clove taste throughout with a smokeyness to it.

20th March 2020

Phenominal Liquid

I've been an avid rum drinker for years and I enjoy trying new things, so I've had my eye on Dark Matter. I was delightfully surprised when I was given it as a gift this Christmas. I'm not typically the type to drink things straight, usually the alcohol overpowers the subtle taste for me, but when I opened the bottle and took a sniff I couldn't help but pour a tipple into a glass and have a sip. What a revelation - it's got a complex sweetness and a delightfully enjoyable spice that changes on your palate. I never thought I'd find something so delicious that I'd want to roll around my tongue first, absolutely incredible! The heat mellows out and the spicey notes linger. Ladies and Gentlemen - I consider this the best rum I've ever had and I don't say that lightly.

It's exceptional neat; smooth and lightly smoky from the intense spice, it's wonderful mixed, if you try it with something fizzy the bubbles add to the experience. It's brought a playfullness to rum that I had no idea was lacking. I'm excited to try it with different things, some are saying to have it with lime and I truly reccomend it, I've yet to try it with ginger ale but I certainly will!

If you have the chance, and can handle the heat, try it. You won't regret this phenominal Scottish beauty.

Bold strong clove aftertaste initial hit subtle then warm

A fantastic surprise Xmas present this spiced rum is fantastic like someone has posted you will love it or hate it me fab for shot on a cold night.

25th December 2019

One of the best

13th December 2019

Not too bad. Bit of a hit or miss depending on palette.

It is an odd one that is for sure. The initial splash of flavour is an odd sensation. I think the aftertaste is alot nicer than the initial wash of flavour. Try with a mixer to relax the initial hit and it really is quite nice.

5th December 2019

An aftertaste I can’t get behind!

The aftertaste on this rum is incredibly odd and, for me personally, distasteful. I don’t mind cloves, but it lasts too long on the palette for me. I can see why another poster has called it the Marmite of spiced rum. I’m sure there are people that will love this bold rum, but for me it lacks subtlety.

23rd October 2019

A beautiful rum

Was in Dundee on business from London. Went into a small pub on a rainy night and asked for spiced rum with ginger ale, one ice cube. Honestly, the taste was unlike any other spiced rum...the spices come through wonderfully, with an intense beauty. After I had a straight double with one ice cube. And then another two. I was hooked. My friend and colleague also tried it and said. "man , this is a dangerous's like a siren of the sea..she'll call you and pull you in". Truly some interesting engineering to produce a rum of this standard. I went and bought two bottles the next day. Fantastic.

17th October 2019

Gorgeous, sweet and moreish.

I've just tasted this for the first time in my local jazz/music bar. I have always liked spiced rum and this is delicious but possibly only if you have a slightly sweet tooth and drink it straight with just a cube or 2 of ice to soften. I could happily have drunk it all night, but my husband would have had to have carried me home and I'm a bit too grown up for that now!

12th October 2019

Excellent. A definite regular.

Was bought a bottle as a gift. Really don't know what to expect but I was thoroughly impressed. Initially very sweet, like a cola cube but quickly punches you in the face with a strong, spicy but very deep flavour. It has a smooth finish. Definitely drink it neat. Would highly recommend.

26th September 2019

Excellent and dangerously drinkable.

Picked up on a whim to satisfy the Rum madness, this fiery concoction immediately satisfied. Warming and smooth, with a rich depth of Nutmeg and Clove, an underlying fruitiness and a sayisfying moreish finish, this was exceptional taken straight or cut with the juice of half a lime. Will be revisiting!

7th August 2019

add to trawler

A little too spicy for most rum drinkers, but very good indeed! I think I'll mix it with Trawler or Woods just to tone it down a bit but it'll be a sure thing for a special day!!
Do they all have a connection with the North East?

27th July 2019

Superb after dinner spiced rum, ideal washed over ice🤔

An absolute taste of ambrosia🤓 I found this in a Cuban Tapas bar in Sheffield and as an after dinner drink was superb just washed over ice a complete delight with no after burn just a lingering deep taste of so many spices among the molasses. Definitely I’ll be buying a bottle.

23rd July 2019

Marmite of run

if you like the taste of cloves then this rum is for you. If you don’t you may struggle but the underlying taste is awesome and almost makes up for the gloves taste. It’s a hard one to review as the quality just shines through.

20th July 2019

Beautifully Different

I was given this as a birthday present a few weeks ago and tonight I thought I would open it and have a small glass. I am currently drinking it straight and it is certainly different from other rums I have tried. I think if I am going to drink any more of this I need a mixer, any suggestions (not a big fan of coke as a mixer}.

17th July 2019

Pure Dead Brilliant

Lovely rich flavour. Always chose this over other rums if a bar sells it.

13th July 2019

Just drink half a bottle and it’s magic

22nd June 2019

A tasty, spicy treat to the senses.

Too much and you’ve blown it, just the right amount and it’s a treat to the tongue and a spicy, sweet splash soaking of the senses. I haven’t tried many mixers other than cola but it’s a win so far.

14th June 2019

Spiced Rum that has clove(n) opinion

I agree with one half of the reviews listed. Far too strong in cloves. All I could think of was tooth tincture. If you like cloves you’ll love this, if not stick with something like Bumbu for spiced rum.

8th June 2019

Nice with apple juice

Love this rum.. Drink it with apple juice and a slice of lime

28th May 2019

Love it

I can see why it divides opinion. I personally loved it. Very spicy but very moreish. Its similar to Rumbullion although I prefer Dark Matter of the two

7th May 2019

My new favourite rum

It's an awesome rum I had so much of it at Christmas time that I had to be carried home. I won't be drinking it neat again. So I will try complimenting it with iron brew. Next time.

5th May 2019

Excellent Rum

I've had this in the pub several times, and I've tried it with a couple of different mixers. It may sound odd, but i find that Irn Bru really compliments the flavour, whereas coke fights with the flavour.

Even neat, it still has a delightful taste.

3rd May 2019

Disappointing days for the Rum trade.

This Rum smells and tastes like Christmas. It is a very Bristsh Rum, lacking the ingredients that would give it more of a traditional taste. I wanted to love this, given that it is the first Rum from Scotland but I just don't. I will drink the bottle, be rude not too. I wouldn't buy it again though, it is just too over powering rum is a light summery drink. Even kracken or other dark rums can be lightened with the right mixer. This Rum is basically like drinking Christmas syrup and isn't helped by mixers.

24th March 2019

Lovely fresh taste and a new take on spicy rum

I just found this in a pub in Edinburgh. I'm a big rum fan and I think this is my new favourite. I didn't find lime complimentary to the flavour but on its own with cola it was awesome. It reminded me of the fireball gobstoppers you used to get as a kid. Bit spicy and a hint of aniseed.

1st February 2019

Just... wow

This was bought for me as a leaving present, I finally opened it yesterday to taste and my god it was good! It's quite ginger heavy in taste which I like, it tastes a lot like Christmass as well with the pepper and allspice notes in it. This is now tied as my favourite rum, Tied with Woods Navy Rum.
For those who hated it, I will gladly relieve you of those bottles

24th December 2018

Christmas in a bottle

This is Christmas in a bottle, I absolutely love it. A spiced rum to be sipped slowly and enjoyed by a roaring fire. It is so rich and complex you only want a couple at a time. Been a rum drinker for 63 years from my first 25 year old Appleton's on the Appleton Estate in Jamaica, (divine) in the 1960's and this is definitely one of the highlights. If the Dog s*** reviewer wishes to send me his bottle I'll happily relieve him of it..

28th November 2018

Marmite - love it or loathe it.

This rum is like marmite - it’s divisive.
This is definitely NOT a rum for people who are staunch traditionalists - who believe “spiced” is a six letter word never to be associated with rum.
However. If you do not have a closed mind and are willing to subject your palette to new adventures in taste (and enjoy a spice explosion), then look no further.
It is definitely different, but not for the sake of it. Let it breathe for an hour before sipping, and the incredible complexity becomes clearer, the ginger and allspice prevalent and warming, the lingering pepper notes leaving your taste buds craving more.
Could I drink this every day? No. It is a little sweet for me - not sickly but I prefer a slightly smokier rum for that. But it is one that will have a permanent place on my rum shelf - and I loathe marmite with a passion.

20th November 2018

Dog s***

I've been drinking rum for a long time. This absolutely disgusting vile Benylin medicine tasting foul offensive liquid is NOT RUM! It would strip the worst toilet of any stains! It's absolutely horrible! Un-drinkable!

3rd November 2018

Very unusual

Very unusual, exotic, oriental taste.

10th October 2018

Mmm Gingery

I like ginger. I really like ginger. I can sit there and happily work my way through a bag of crystallized ginger. As I said: I really like ginger. I was introduced to this rum on a night our with friends mixed with Ginger Ale it is divine! Others who have given it low scored I suspect are looking for a more subtle drink, which it isn't ant the idea of drinking it neat doesn't appeal yo me either (neither would any rum). With a mixer, however, it becomes a firey little slice of fried gold.

8th October 2018

Dark n rich n tastes like Christmas

The barman insisted on me trying this rum as I like really dark, rich rums. I put up a fight as “normal” spiced rums are too sweet for me. One sip and I was turned forever! Now my favourite rum (alongside Woods). He served it a third rum, 2 thirds coke with a big slice of orange. Devine.

15th September 2018

Astronomically Beautiful

I do not understand the negative reviews? This is the best of the best as far as I am concerned.
In fact it is now my only spirt that I drink, beautiful to finish a night with, many of my friends have had a taste and not one have been negative about it.

31st August 2018

Loved it, but it is not your usual spiced dark rum

I love it in a dark’n’stormy! Don’t really care that it is rather different to your usual spiced rum (hence many rum “experts” hate it). If you like a heavily spiced dark’n’stormy, if you like strong, spicey spirits, give it a try.

20th August 2018

Absolutely lovely!!

How anyone can describe this as "the worse drink ever" .... must say your review made me chuckle.... if it was that "intense they shot my taste buds to pieces".... why have a 2nd shot??? ..... laughing at this review "made my tummy ache"..... an absolutely lovely spiced rum...very different with quite a scented taste. .... i was surprised at the all spice.. would definitely buy and also recommend....... but hey mr "worse drink ever" if your giving yours away send it this way!!!

9th August 2018

Worst drink ever

I can't remember ever drinking something so obnoxious. Ginger and spice flavours are so intense they shot my taste buds to pieces. 2 shots of this gave me a tummy ache. I've tasted my fair share of stuff over the years, exceptional stuff, mediocre stuff, boring and bland stuff, whatever. But this drink... this looks like it was designed as a dare, there is no subtelty, no levels, no interaction between flavours, just a big bang of overwhelming spice. No idea what I'm going to do with the rest of this bottle. Would happily give it away.

25th July 2018

Loved it. Definitely should be drunk neat to get the full taste. If anything bad to say about it it’s that it’s quite sweet, but I love the allspice and clove flavour. Maybe not a drink for people that mix their drinks but then again whisky and rum shouldn’t really be mixed with anything bar a hint of water or an ice cube but everyone to their own

21st May 2018

A big hit of spice

Unlike any rum I've tried before. The cloves and other spices hit you as soon as you open it. So far I've had a few neat sips but I think I will need a mixer with it. It's just too much of a hit for me. I'll try ginger beer rather than coke to take the edge off it. Definitely different.

16th April 2018

if you like hot spice then you'll like this, if you don't then avoid it.

Spicy clove smell and strong HOT taste of cloves, cardamom, allspice, maybe a hint of cinnamon. The spices make it bitter but invigorating; It's almost a cold-mulled flavour. It's very interesting but I like dark rums to be sweet, and this wasn't to my taste

14th April 2018

Awesome taste if you like spices. Buy normal rum if you don't like spices you Wallies

30th March 2018

I so wanted to like this! :(

Smell: very strong spice, lots of cloves, little sweetness.
Neat: almost a peppery taste! Very strong aftertaste, very warming and alcoholic. Don’t think I like. Disappointed, wanted to like it a lot!
With coke: far too clovey to be drunk a lot, spicy, but not very pleasant

23rd March 2018

Belter of a rum

This is a belter of a rum. Now I love my sweet spiced rums like OVD, Redleg, etc but as others have stated, this is wonderfully different. It stands out from the crowd. I recommend you try it before you buy a whole bottle. Xmas spices in a drink - madness or genius? You decide.

22nd March 2018

I am still not sure about this! My favourite rum is lambs navy, I saw the Dark Matter bottle and was really interested to try this. I tried it neat, which was hot, spicy and very heavy on cloves (not my favourite spice) but I do love the gingery heat. So tried it next with coke, which tempered the cloves. I know what the other reviewer means about the marmite effect - I quite like that it isn't easy to drink, it makes it more interesting!!! I can imagine that it would be really good with some super hot fiery ginger wine/beer.

28th February 2018

It is nice! I like!

I've read the reviews & to be honest I'm not a rum snob. AFAIK spiced rums are meant to go with mixers, like coke. I like this with Bunderberg root beer (or coke). I like this flavour & it's nice to have a spiced rum that's different to the others. I also like Bacardi Fuego though this is slightly different. I get what others are saying but I find myself returning to this for it's unique spicy flavour. It's great as a winter warmer.

31st December 2017

The marmite of spiced rums

First time I saw this bottle I knew i'd have to try it. Hadn't read any reviews on it before I tried it so I was shocked when I took a mouthful. If ginger and cloves aren't your thing, give this a miss as it is VERY hot, like plenty of other reviews have stated, Morgans spiced this is not! It's 50 50 with my friends, one says it's his favourite, one says it's the worst he's ever tried so it has the marmite syndrome, love it or hate it. Personally I think it tastes amazing with coke, really delicious and I always want another one as soon as my glass is empty.

29th December 2017

Love or Hate, Utterly unique

I read about this on a local Spirit's store website, tried it at my local Rum bar and was blown away. It is NOT a standard spiced rum. This is the only Rum made in Scotland and is far from the standard smooth vanilla flavors you may expect from a Spiced rum. I absolutely love this Rum though. It is just like Brown sugar and Ginger, it tingles for minutes afterwards and is unlike anything I've ever had. This will either be something you hate or you love. Hense all the 1 star or 5 star reviews. Love it or hate it though, there's nothing else like it and I went out and bought a bottle the next day I loved it so much. Try it before you judge from the reviews.

15th December 2017

Ginger Matter.

Ginger, hot pepper, ginger, non descript alcohol and huge overtones of ginger make this a rum that will not be to many people's taste. If you like Morgan's, Sailory Jerry or RedLeg types of spiced rum then you'll hate this stuff.
For a previous reviewer to say it is good with ginger beer makes the mind boggle.

5th December 2017

Drinking neat is a no go

Basically it's like drinking a liquid Christmas cake not like rum at all so it should be renamed and certainly not too my taste

13th November 2017

Cloves, cloves and more cloves

Cloves! Yuk, I couldn’t taste anything else and I hate cloves. Tastes awful to me but appreciate others may like it. If they like cloves

11th November 2017

Overwhelming smell, but it's complicated...

The nose feel is very heavy cardamom/clove, even overwhelming and off putting.

Then again... the taste. I really like the warm palate of the spices.
As others have said, great from a flask when you don't get punched right to the nose.

11th November 2017

It’s rather good and distinctly, obviously, spiced with real spices. My only assertion is that it’s woah, really REALLY dominated by CARDAMOM!! ...and CLOVE!! It’s clearly a pretty good underlying rum though, with very little roughness, and the sweetness is well balanced.

9th November 2017

Its an acquired taste

Surprisingly different! Flavours of cardamon, black pepper and clove are most apparent. Goes down great with ginger beer.

9th November 2017

Immense neat or with ginger beer

I tried this for the first time last night and absolutely loved it. We had it with some ginger beer and ice and the flavours were immense. Looking forward to my next drink already.

22nd October 2017

Goes well with ham

Someone told me this was a spiced rum. After trying and trying with it, I've come to the conclusion that "spiced" sets an expectation which this rum just can't live up to. It's a decent base rum but it's hidden under a lot of clove, so much so that I could taste it throughout the following day.

It's OTT in a way that's not for everyone and the barrage of "spice" makes it seem a little industrial at first (that could also be partially due to the waft of young spirit you get on the nose). IMO it can't be tamed with a mixer - this just brings out even more clove - though if you have got a bottle and don't enjoy it, I imagine it would make an exceptional marinade for ham.

In short, it's a divisive rum which is why people only seem to be giving it massive praise or trashing it. The truth is it's somewhere between the two in terms of quality, but I'd certainly recommend trying a sample before you buy.

13th October 2017

Hands down the most disgusting drink I've had the misfortune to ever have.

Tastes like it is intended as some kind of joke shot drunk only as student dares... like aftershock or fireball.

Clearly the brothers have very little faith in their base rum add they've tried as hard as possible to stop you from tasting it. Overpowering cloves and black pepper and the ginger.... oh my god the ginger. Like distilled essence of fiery ginger beer. So disgusting, took a good quarter of an hour to get the awful taste out of my mouth.

Why is the minimum score 0.5/5? Way more generous a score than I should like to give.

12th October 2017

From run taster.

I happily try any rum. But,this one I have to say is terrible. Open the bottle it is not the smell of a good rum,can not decide what it was but it was not good and it got worse when I tried it,thought I was tasting a bunch of chemicals put together just to annoy people. Thumbs down 👎 for me.

29th September 2017

Have a second dram & it's a totally different drink

It's the only thing more beautiful & more complicated than my wife!

21st April 2017

OK if you like cloves!

Too heavily cloved for my taste. Wouldn't buy again.

1st March 2017

Bought this as present for myself for Xmas .One of the best spiced rums out there. It's like Xmas in a glass. Will be back for another bottle.

4th January 2017

Great with a chunk of ice

Great aromas of cloves and cinnamon - a winter warmer yet chilled with a little ice

21st December 2016

First try is with soda and ice. Love it. Smooth as. Definitely getting a bottle just looked at where I can purchase in Australia. From what I can see one place in Victoria.

14th December 2016

Best spiced rum I have tried!

Once you have a glass you won't stop! It's that addictive.

28th November 2016

Mr Grimes

Very nice spiced rum.Best drunk neat.
I was told I wouldn't be able to buy this back in England. So promptly had a taster then brought a bottle. After checking online it's is widely available.

If you don't like spiced rum don't buy

11th September 2016

Christmas in a bottle.

Great stuff, really fine. It's like drinking a bottled mince pie. What's not to love about that?

23rd August 2016

A hip flask hit!

Definitely not a rum that you use any mixer with or really any ice. I tried it with coke and then with ice and just spoils the taste.
It is certainly different to most spiced rums and has a fair hint of ginger as an after taste.
I had it with a few friends as a warmer playing golf in the rain and it certainly hit the spot. Unfortunately i did not bring a big enough hip flask as it went down like a helium balloon!!

12th July 2016

Grudgingly Giving It A Thumbs Down

We were really excited to try Dark Matter - so excited we set up an evening with friends with varied spiced rums. We left Dark Matter until a little later in the evening and mixed in some commercial rums like Redleg, Kraken and Sailor Jerrys. Well, I can tell you that Dark Matter blew us away. Literally. The spice was so overpowering, we couldn't finish a glass. We tried mixing it with some Pepsi and then with some Ginger Ale and it only got worse. In fact, even an Angostura 1919 couldn't wash away the taste and we ended the night. Disappointed. So disappointed.

23rd May 2016

Allow to warm

A rum that changes flavour as it draws warmth from your hand. Becomes so much smoother and richer. No mixer, no ice. At first it tastes like cloves firing on your tongue and palate .. then you realise it's a super-concentrated ginger. For a 'single-note' flavour, it's quite complex. Will buy again.

17th May 2016

Wow, that's different!

My son bought this for my birthday and I am amazed how well the heavy spices work in the drink. I have tasted many spiced rums before but none like this and will certainly have another bottle or two of this particular one.

11th May 2016

Not for mixing

So much better neat. Love it.

9th May 2016

Worth a go

The strength of flavour is sensational. It's a great spiced rum with ginger ale and a slice of lime.

18th March 2016

First time of trying dark matter

Had d/m for the first time and loved the flavor of it and the spicy notes that were left in the mouth would recommend it to anyone even if the are not Rum drinkers bet it would be great to have before or after a curry

18th February 2016

Too spicy

Not bad once you get past the very heavily spiced initial taste. This is more like a gimmicky 'fireball' tipple than a nice sipping rum. Shame because I really wanted to like this one.

21st January 2016

strong stuff

Don't even bother mixing, straight up is the way to go.

28th December 2015

too many cloves

I can cope with it,but there is way too much clove flavour to this. Don't get me wrong it gets better bythe third glass, but I can't help but feel if they backed off the cloves by 50% this would be a massive hit. I've tried with ice, fresh orange and tomato juice, going to try apple juice next.

28th December 2015

Obviously the dark matter has taken taken over on this festive day!! But looking at the label it's a real lab label!!! I'll leave it there.

25th December 2015

Wow , at first I thought too much but after finishing the bottle I'm thinking I want more. It's not smooth .'

25th December 2015

For the may sayers

This rum is exceptional, but I can understand why some would struggle with it. For those saying they don't like it try adding Fiery Jamaican Ginger Beer to it. Seriously delightful

22nd December 2015

An Experience

Quite astounding at first - a real smack to the senses, then wonderful, full bodied warmth which flows through right to the end. I'm aware it is a rum which will divide people, given its uncompromising flavour, but am fully converted to this dreamy substance. Nothing boring about it whatsoever. Love the "sciency" packaging and branding also - my favourite sipping rum!

14th December 2015

Christmas rum

Was excited to try this after reading the positive reviews, however we were somewhat disappointing. There is an overpowering taste of Christmas cake, which for me ruined the drink on its own or with a mixer.

7th December 2015

Scotland's 1st Rum it's a cracker !!!!

I love this so much, a kick from the ginger and cloves but worth every sip over and over and over again. It's pricey but if your into Morgans, Kracken, and Oakheart this is worth the extra few pennies.

It'll blow your head off!

The spice in this rum is so intense it is all you can taste. I can only taste is pepper, ginger and the burning sensation at the back of my throat.

A good rum but not what those who like the Kraken, Morgans Spiced, Redleg etc. would like.

Chairman's Reserve Spiced is still the best!

Aye!! Or is it "Aaaarrrr" ?

Well they do say that Scotsmen and pirates have some words in common - and both would most definitely say AYE to this fine tipple. A beautiful spicy rum, incredibly smooth and of a very high quality. A new regular in my drinks cabinet and behind the bar. Well done to Scotland's newest and possibly first ever rum makers!! AYE!!

Dark (Matter) and Stormy

I was a big drinker of Kraken spiced rum until I tried Dark Matter at my local and absolutely loved it. Smooth but spicy flavour with healthy amounts of ginger, I drink it mainly with ice but makes an extremely good Dark and Stormy, which is ironically a brilliant drink for the few sunny days in Scotland.

It has converted me to an enthusiastic rum drinker and I avidly await the sequel from the Ewen brothers!

Simply Awesome!

The best spiced rum I've ever had! Complex, smooth and yet intense in flavour. Not for the faint-hearted. If you want to try something completely different from all other spiced rums then try this!

Proper Spiced

This is what I look for in a spiced rum; not too sweet and with a healthy kick that awakens the senses. The ginger notes are prominent, but these seem to hand over to the pepper on tasting to give a full on spiciness. I prefer to drink it straight, some may prefer it with a lump of ice...the wife has been caught adding it to her hot chocolate!!

Very dark matter

Grrrrrrrr. Was expecting great things from these guys. Should have called it pepper and clove rum ! I am a big fan of spiced rums , and where this is not sickly sweet like many, I feel they have been a little more than heavy handed with the cloves and pepper, for this money I would have hoped for something I could have sipped, I fear coke will be its only hope of ever getting out the cubbord agin
