Sit down, gentle reader, and we shall tell you a tale. On the 2nd May 2007 a great fire ravaged St Lucia Distillers distillery, destroying much of the storage buildings. "Good heavens!" You might exclaim, and rightly so. The result of this was the distillers had to find new storage locations for their casks, in all manner of places. They forgot the location of some of the casks, only to find them recently, and it turned out the rum they found was sublime... From a PR standpoint, it was a piece of good fortune, very lucky indeed.
Spicy and intense with coffee beans and cocoa, maple spice and vanilla, a little potpourri and coffee beans.
Dark rich spices, apricot jam, golden syrup, toffee brittle, coffee and treacle.
Plum and raisin.

Smell is pretty subtle. Toffee, burned sugar and a touch of varnish. Taste is pretty subtle too, to be honest. Pretty much the same as the smell, with a quite a long finish, and a gentle burn. It's also on the finish that a bit of complexity comes up. It's pretty dry, with the cask influence coming up. Overall, the impression is of a very dark, slightly burnt, sugar with a bit of cask influence. There's a richness hiding in there, but also a wateriness from it being diluted to 40%. It lacks the funk of the Original, and the agricole component interest of Legacy, but does have its own vibe too. Wierdly, it reminds me of Diplomatico Reserva, but drier and less complex.
I always look forward to the first sip of a glass of the Forgotten Cask rum. It fills the mouth with a deep & rich medley of warm and luxurious tones. As the tasting note says, think toffee and syrup but not too sweet, earthy and indulgent spices
One of my favourites and, at the price, not too expensive a tipple. Purely a personal thing, but I like a bottle of rum with a cork. That said, once it's out of the bottle the rea joy begins. The flavours are a decent array of toffee, fruit and a warmth that comes straight from St Lucia. Works well straight, ina cocktail (nothing creamy) or with a good mixer.
I bottle a bottle of this while in St. Lucia and just opened today, on a cold, icy, snowy winter day. Allowed it to warm up in snifter and I like it. A touch spicy, but not over the top, I think the most I'm picking up is vanilla. With using Jim Beam, Jack Daniels and Buffalo Trace Barrels in the aging process I think I expected a little fuller, bolder flavor. Not that the flavor was off, it had a great flavor and I quite enjoyed it, but didn't quite hit the fullness I expected.
An absolute treasure.
