Caroni 20 Year Old - Batch 1 (That Boutique-y Rum Company)
Though Trinidad's Caroni distillery has been silent since it closed in 2002, some of its rums have made their way into hands of enthusiasts thanks to indie bottlers like That Boutique-y Rum Company. This one is a 20 year old expression, and it's pretty bloomin' delicious indeed. What's more, you don't have to go sneaking around an abandoned distillery to try it. Bonus.
Batch 1 is a release of 501 bottles.
Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt
Nose
Sugared almonds and honeyed pecans bring a delicate, nutty sweetness among chocolate caramel fudge and oak char. Light spice, buttery vanilla and sweet tobacco develop among hints of red wine and rancio.
Palate
Big hits of prickling winter spice as well as juicy pineapple and roasted apricot rush to the palate among earthy oak. Manuka honey-drenched red meat, savoury nuts, coffee beans and just a drop of engine oil arise in the backdrop.
Finish
The spice continues to fizz away in a long, smooth finish.
Overall
A stunningly intense, refined and full-bodied delight with some truly wonderful cask influence. This is an absolute superstar of a rum.
