This festive gin liqueur is named after Reverend Hubert Bell Lester, who created his winter liqueur recipe in 1904 for the Christmas gathering of his congregation. Years later, his great-grandson recreated the original formula with a few updates and help from Joe Wadsack, who is generally thought to have the best palate in the wine business. There are Amalfi lemons and oranges, along with a few seasonal spices - this one's a winner simply over ice and will do well in a Negroni, too.
Warming and spicy, with loads of oily citrus zest, a good handful of dried fruit and peppery juniper underneath it all.
We’ve just bought our son in law this(again) and we have a champagne cocktail every Christmas Day with a maraschino cherry and English sparkling wine. Oooo I can’t wait. Then we finish off the bottle with a toast to the REVEREND after the meal. ?⛪️
Liqueur conjures up sweet and one dimensional. Well think again. This gin liqueur is sensational..fresh from citrus, spices ..I got star anise ..my husband cinnamon (I usually dint like cinnamon) and then this deep raisin sherry sweetness. My friend said “liquid Christmas” and that’s exactly it.. I wish it could be Christmas every day….we always order 2..one for quiet moments..and one for family. You must try it..bottle obviously special too…x
Such a great story. Thomas the founder was doing a tasting in Fortnum & Mason and was v interesting to hear about his story and his great grandfather. (There are some funny stories about Hubert..he was a character). We like linger drinks and live it with ginger ale, clementine light or blood orange soda. And neat like today when it’s freezing and we are walking the dogs.
It’s now a tradition to drink a champagne cocktail using the amazing Reverend Hubert while making the Christmas dinner. You must add a a maraschino cherry (the new style dark ones not the old radioactive red ones ?) Then we have what’s left with Christmas pud. Try it…it’s better than you can imagine ❤️?
I know it’s beautiful and amazing in champagne and a negroni. We like it straight..no Ice. It’s so fresh from the citrus and yet has that autumn /winter vibe of liquid raisins with a mince pie feel..not too sweet and enough punch without the harshness of some other styles. You can taste the real flavours…worth the £ for sure.
