Thomas Dakin Manchester Bottling Note

Made with eleven botanicals including juniper, orange peel, English coriander, angelica, cubeb pepper and liquorice as well as "a hint of red cole" aka horseradish! It's named after Thomas Dakin, who began producing gin in Warrington in the second half of the 18th century, founding what would later become Greenall's. He was a pioneer who made gin of a surprising quality for the day, and who is rightly celebrated.

Thomas Dakin Manchester Gin Reviews

Quite complex yet smooth & elegant.

I had been dying to get my hands on this gin but had always ended up with a different one instead. This time it was bought for me so I decided to try it with a pair of Fever Tree tonics: Aromatic and Mediterranean. I found this gin came alive with the Aromatic tonic.
To all who gave this gin a low rating I would sincerely recommend that you have fun trying it with different tonics and find your own favourite serve.

👎

I enjoy trying new gins and typically look for a classic style gin. I don't understand the trend of fruit flavoured gins. Reading the back of the bottle, I thought this gin would be a flavour I'd like. Sadly no. It tastes as though mouldy products have been added in the process or that it's just gone mouldy and the company still decided to sell it as an acquired taste.

I'll stick to Gin Mare or Tanquerey.

I'll give this gin a 1 star rating because it smells better than it tastes.

Wonderful

My favourite gin. Definitely a distinctive taste. Very refreshing in a gin and tonic, with a “masculine” taste, not at all flowery.

Gin? My arse!

Had it bought as a Christmas present, obviously the person that gave it to me has a grudge. I have never in my long life tasted anything so disgusting! Was thinking of infusing it, but think it would be a waste of Raspberries, could work as sink unblocker because that's where it's going!

Fave Gin

I have tried many gins over the last few years, but this is always my go to, the flavours are fantastic citrus base and the liquorice notes really do come through, I highly recommend this gin, I always have a bottle in the house and its what I order as a g&t if I am in bar....fantastic!!

Amazing gin!

Got this only as I was in Manchester and always try bring something local home. Wasn't expecting anything special but I was very wrong. This is my new favourite gin. incredibly smooth with citrus notes. goes really well with both Clementine and elder flower tonic or perfectly with any normal tonic. This doesn't need any garnish!

My favourite gin

Beware you may get hooked! Smells like gin and tastes like gin with loads of juniper overlying all. Makes a lovely G&T. The only drawback of drinking this moreish masterpiece is that ever after most competitors taste diluted in comparison. It's a small batch gin, even so small variations in the intensity of the flavours would not account for the poor reviews. I can only assume that they were posted by Mancunian haters.

Great

Excellent him everything as described. Lovely flavor with nice undertones of orange. About the best I have tasted a little tonic doesn't take away the undertones of orange. Certainly one to purchase again love it.

20th August 2018

I would have given it 5 stars but the iPad was not having it

My favourite Gin. The citrus notes are wonderful and when you add a few Juniper Berriesand slices of orange with ice then the finished result is sublime.

5th August 2018

One of the few gins that you can still taste when adding tonic and also orange which l love. DELICIOUS!

Today was the first time l knew of it’s existence. I was born in Manchester but moved when l was about 5. However, after tasting it today it has quickly become my favourite!

Thomas dakin gin

Bought to take on holiday, a lovely smooth gin very easy drinking, will definitely buy again

Different

Given to me for my birthday by my son , I've tried a few different gins but this one beats most of them ,very nice indeed

2nd April 2018

Complex satisfying

Taste: citrus and sweet but very dry liquorice with a hint of pepper. Very different to proprietary brands Nose: perfume; flowery akin to old fashioned perfumes not modern industrial steely slatey concoctions.

25th March 2018

In my top 5

Really impressed with the deep traditional flavours this gin has. Do not get this if you think you like gin, get this if you like proper gins such as bathtub, leopold and chase dry.

8th March 2018

subtle notes of industrial revolution

This Gin enabled me to complete the construction of a Cozy Coupe for my daughter in under 30 minutes. Anyone with any knowledge of anything knows that the task of building one of those things is up there with hand digging a Victorian canal through the streets of Olde Manchester.

23rd December 2017

Surprising

Lovely gin. Not what I expected or subtle but I like it. Perfect with a little tangerine peel and a fever tree tonic. Only loses half a star because I don't know why it is marketed as from Manchester when it is clearly from Warrington.

21st December 2017

My favourite gin

I like a good hit of juniper and citrus and this has that and a lot more, but if you prefer a more subtle taste, maybe look elsewhere. Ignore some of the ridiculously negative reviews on here - if we all liked exactly the same thing there wouldn't be so many gins available would there?

Five Star Shimmy Lifter

For the first few sips I thought the ‘Thomas Dakin’ was bleughhh...

However once its finely distilled select botanicals got a grip of my higher cerebral cortex they wouldn’t let go...

I’m hooked – it’s blooming lovely.

Probably the best shimmy lifter my dearly departed grandmother never got to taste.

Shame.

25th January 2017

Really good

Bought as a present for Christmas and to be honest I did not hold out any hope for this gin. I was wrong - great mix of flavours puts in in my go to list along with Opihr and Monkey 47. Oranges, pepper, my sister swears blind she can taste the liquorice though I'm not convinced. Not floral or light so if that's your bag steer well clear.

7th January 2017

A revelation

This is so nice you can just drop a few spoons of water in it and enjoy without tonic. It's fragrant, complex and crisp and tastes like it has been lovingly prepared by its distillers, not just boiled up and shoved into bottles. This is quality stuff and highly recommended.

17th December 2016

Excellent!

One of the best Gin's I ever tried. Lovely !

10th July 2016

new gin drinker

tried loads of different gins at the Good Food Show in Birmingham last year and this without doubt is the smoothest gin I tried, knocks Sipsmiths and others I cannot recall into fits. The taste is fresh and very morish-my only complaint is that it is almost impossible to get hold of in the Midlands-will have to resort to an online purchase to get my next fix!!

1st June 2016

More than good,

The wharf gin night by the canal with 15 gins sent me here to buy as best in show*****

9th March 2016

Superb

Tried this for the first time at the London Gin Festival last week end and it is absolutely fantastic. Ended up being one of the most popular gins on show. Recommended garnish is orange peel and coriander... Do it, you won't regret it! Ignore the nonsense below - this one is going places.

24th February 2016

Not a bad gin

Easy drinking with a zest of grapefruit. Enjoying one now. Not as bad as the review say. Not the best though either, for that go Cotswolds or Brockmans .

17th November 2015

Horrendous

Very odd flavour - presumably the influence of 'Red Cole'. This stuff smells vile and tastes worse.

I'm a huge fan of small batch gins so really wanted to like this. Sadly it is simply the worst gin I've ever tasted.

I keep attempting to palm it off to unsuspecting guests but they're having none of it, so my scientific test is complete. It's going down the drain - I hope it will be more useful at clearing blockages than it has been as a beverage.

Avoid!

15th November 2015

well i'd say it is a bit pretentious

As a product goes yeah its a gin but basically it tastes the same as greenalls (same company) with a tad of difference for which you're being charged quite a bit extra for. Also as its USP is to be a more 'artisan crafted product' than its cousins the gentleman below has proved it doesn't match its promise 😒

29th October 2015

A Proper Gin

Not sure what previous reviewer has been smoking and, yes, this may not be the best gin out there, but the best way I can describe this in general terms is that it's a gin for people who like gin.
An odd thing to say, but it's certainly not one of your pretentious 'craft' products that essentially dilute the more traditional flavours associated with gin.
Squeeze some orange in, ganish with a slice, use a decent quality tonic and (the important bit) WAIT a few minutes - it really does make all the difference.
It's not subtle, it's very dry but it's a good quality, non-pretentious gin.

21st October 2015

Truly awful

If you like the stale mouldy smell of a carpet in an old withered pub, then this is the gin for you. It smells like it has been distilled with grass (and not the good kind), actual grass... From a field. And the palate doesn't get any more enticing; it tastes as harsh and sniping as this review.

This review scores 2 stars instead of 1 because of the fact that it says "Machester" on the front, and I'm bored of seeing "London Dry Gin". But as for the gin itself, honestly, buy something else.
