Description

A rye whiskey, in gin's clothing. Made with a base of 100% rye, the St. George Dry Rye has a marvellous malty signature, warm and spicy. This is followed up by a small number of classic gin botanicals, including the obvious juniper berry, black peppercorn, caraway, coriander, grapefruit peel and lime peel. These were all chosen to compliment the warmth from the rye, and it certainly does just that!

Nose

Spices leap out at you, warming pepper and juniper, a little rocket, malt too. Grapefruit and lime, coriander, caraway, Wine Gums and Smith Kendon travel sweets.

Palate

Malty, peppery juniper, Moroccan spices, rye and coriander.

Finish

Warming, flavoursome peppercorn, quite creamy.

Overall

This is something else. And it's something we like muchly much.

Avoid

As someone who likes both Jen and rye whiskey, I found this to be basically undrinkable. Sipping it made me feel a bit sick. St George's other gins, especially Terroir, are nothing short of inspired--buy one of those instead.

Disappointing.

I like to try different gins. It's getting to be a hobby. I bought this a while ago but I'm struggling to like it. It has a medicinal taste that's still there even when it's drenched with tonic and it's not good neat, so it's fighting for space at the back of the drinks cabinet. The American gins I've tried so far have been excellent, if a bit pricey, but I don't think I'll buy this again.

Semi-rough stuff but quaffable in the right cocktail

This gin is definitely ruff around the edges but interesting. The in your face, slightly bitter rye spirit is the star of the show nose and taste-wise. For me, in a martini,...no. But,..when I'm in the mood in a negroni or G&T (depending on the type of tonic) it works.

Delicious ? ?

Wow! This is so different from a 'standard' gin and yet it has all the familiar notes and taste point you'd expect from gin. Warming and packing a real punch. Great in cocktails needing a robust gin kick.
