Dr. Squid Gin Bottling Note

Dr. Squid Gin comes to us from the Pocketful of Stones Distillery in Penzance, which was made using a recipe that features real, no-foolin' squid ink! We squid you not! A rather savoury expression, with a coastal feeling to it, along with a few touches of citrus and spice. If that wasn't cool enough, it also turns bright pink when you mix it with tonic! It comes in a copper flask, engraved with all sorts of flora and fauna. It also looks like the eponymous Dr. Squid is on the label...

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Savoury kitchen herbs, balanced by fresh lemon zest and meadowsweet.

Palate: Citrus sits at the core, with woody juniper following. Subtly floral at points, and a touch of sea breeze sneaks in later on.

Finish: Spring blossom and pine.

beautifully flawed

hummm, there's something about this that I just can't put my finger on. Definitely unique in flavour, I neither love it nor hate it. it lacks that really refreshing quality that I look for in a gin and for £50 its just a bit meah. Starting at the beginning the tin is stunning. Very heavy engraved copper with a beautiful nature scene and a definite purchasing draw (and substantial contributitory factor to that price tag) but...when I unscrewed the lid tiny little flecks of copper were floating on the surface of the gin and like another reviews say it does not pour at all well - I've spilled on every try so have ended up getting an oil spout thing to stick in it as this is too pricey to waste.
Flavour wise its quite a heavy flavoured gin. Its more herbal and savoury than others I've tried but for me it has a slightly cloying effect that sticks around and makes it hard to mix with anything other than tonic. That said choose your tonic wisely. My go to is fever tree naturally light but in this it just didn't work making the final drink way too sweet, on my next one I made my own tonic with sparkling water and a tonic bitters and this was better but still didn't quite hit the mark, maybe this one is a martini gin.
Yes it contains squid ink (As for the review that complained about this point, its very clearly labled, if you're vegan or don't like the concept don't buy it!) but if I'm honest I don't really know what this adds to the final product other than a USP, there is a salinity which might be from the ink but I'm sure the inital grey blue colour (and the colour change to mauvey pink) is nothing to do with the ink and I'm wondering if its whatever makes this gin change colour that is the flavour profile in this that I'm just not sold on.
I do love the tin (and will be looking out for another on ebay) but would I buy another bottle of this for the actual gin....the jury's out on this one.

Really nice but not spectacular.

As in previous reviews, the beautiful can is somewhat difficult to pour, especially when full.
The gin itself is really good if not great. I am glad I bought it, but as for a second bottle, maybe not.

Flawed genius

The good:
Gin is lovely
Bottle is amazing
Very unique

The cons:
Expensive
The bottle is near impossible to pour without spilling. This is a big one for me as you waste so much getting it out and it's expensive stuff.

Dr Squid Gin, the essence of Cornwall in a copper flask.

Dr Squid Gin, unique! Dark squid ink tainted liquid turning pinkish with tonic. Its fresh, its different, its a superb gin. Nice balance of flavours. Copper flask makes for great presentation but agree its not the easiest to pour into a measure....at first. The weight of the cap is surprisingly heavy. I reckon the cost of the gin will be covered by the scrap value of the copper. Want something different. Try this masterpiece from Cornwall.

Interesting flavour but be careful pouring

This is an interesting gin, a great gift, and it comes in a beautiful package. Be warned however that the neck is not well designed for pouring into a measure, resulting in spillage. We had to pour direct into the glass, resulting in larger measures :)

Salty , floral and citrus .

Bought for the wife . It's a strange bluey colour until you add tonic when it turns a pinkish hue . Very savoury but with floral and citrus notes .
Even a devoted gin hater appreciated this ! And a very handsome copper flask .

Beautiful

Bought this for a present & I’m not jealous! The flask is absolutely amazing!
I’m hoping they share the gin once I’ve given it to them.

Already a favourite

I bought this for the flask - which is amazing - but the gin itself is probably one of the best I ever tried. I recommend this to anybody!!

Beautiful copper can. Distinct citrus flavour. Love it.

Why use animal product?!

What a gorgeous bottle and I love quality distilled gin but why on earth would you add animal products to this or any gin? Totally unnecessary.

Wonderful!

Wow! What a gin.. The container is amazing and the gin devine.
Loved this. By far the best looking gin bottle I've seen.

Rich, new, unexpected.... a change from the norm

I bought this as a gift for my sister, as a well done for work, that being said, the bottle turned up and i was in love with the quality of the bottle, it was beautifully made and i honestly just wanted to shelf it, but we cacked it and tryed it, it was a very diffrent taste from most gins ive tryed, and im no gin genius, it was lovely and made a lasting impression with a light tonic, would buy again as a gift or a now and then tipple

Get It

I don't leave reviews usually, but I felt compelled with this one. It is stunning, from the bottle to the liquid. The copper flask is beautifully engrave, and whilst mine had a slight ding to the bottom, it added character.

The gin itself is smooth, initially an inky black. The taste is unique to me, and utterly captivating. When tonic was added, there is a colour change, becoming a pinky grey (colour change isn't important to me, but my girlfriend loves it). There are proper citrus punches, with the herbaceous notes in the background no less important.

If you like gin, buy it as soon as you can. Even if you don't, buy it anyway.
