This limited Carabus edition from Papillon Gin has steered its sights away from butterflies, and instead celebrates a rare Dartmoor beetle! The blue ground beetle (also known as carabus intricatus) was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered on Dartmoor in 1985, so the folks at the distillery are donating a portion from each bottle sold to Buglife, a UK invertebrate conservation trust. It's all about the woodland botanicals in here, with the likes of rowan and hawthorn berries, nettles, wood sorrel, and roasted hazelnuts.
Foresty notes of green nettle and piney juniper, with a burst of tart berries rounded by toasted nuts and a touch of vanilla.

This is a fantastically floral gin on the nose, while maintaining a really nice complex flavour profile. I've been a fan of Papillon gin as a nice medium-high ranked flavour, but this Carabus is now firmly in my top five gins.
Like their regular Papillon Gin it seems to have a real taste of Dartmoor with the scents and tastes of the moor coming through. Makes a great G&T and also good over ice.
Beautiful flavour, unlike any gin I have tasted before ( and I have sampled a few!). Don't overdo the tonic or you will lose the subtlety in the flavours. Well done to the distillers.
A Great tasting gin
