From the Swedish Hernö distillers comes a sweet, lip-smacking Old Tom Gin. They use the same botanical selection as their Hernö Dry Gin for this, although they've dialled up the amount of meadowsweet used. After distillation, they add a touch of honey and sugar, giving it the classic sweetness you look for in a traditional Old Tom Gin.
It's got a cat's face on the bottle, harking back to how Old Tom Gin got its name - the tom cat-shaped plaques outside London gin houses from the olden days, where you'd put a coin in the cat's mouth and the bartender would dispense a shot of gin from the cat's paw.
Sweet and subtly grassy at first. Herbaceous notes of cassia and coriander start to develop after a minute or two.
A strong backbone of pine resin and chewy juniper, with honey'd sweetness and a touch of lemon zest following it up.
Fresh vanilla and juicy berries.
Received this as a gift, and there honestly isn't a nicer Old Tom. I don't believe you always 'get what you pay for' in the booming boutique gin industry, but here I can justify every penny. Full flavours, not too sweet. Paired with Walter Gregors tonic this makes a wonderful Nordic sparse and soft G&T. One of my favourite combos.
For me to give a drink five stars it really has to blow me away. This gin comes very close, but I'll save the five stars in case I come across an Old Tom that's even better or more bang for the buck. Great flavor, further enhanced with a touch of honey. This gin goes to waste in a cocktail with other sweetened ingredients, so I prefer this on the rocks. Sure, it's great in drinks too, but I'll pour in something dry and cheaper when I crave a Foghorn.
The saying goes..... 'never judge a book by its cover'.... But in this case that saying does not apply!! Not only has it got a really cool label... the gin is pretty awesome. Well worth a buy... looks great in the drinks cabinet and tastes great.... can't say any more!
This is just great. Full of flawors, and a top notch premium gin.
