Aviation Gin Bottling Note

Founded in 2006, Aviation gin takes its name from the Aviation cocktail, which was created in the 1900s. The gin takes a Dutch style rye spirit base combined with with juniper, lavender, anise, sarsaparilla, orange peel and cardamom, and the botanicals are steeped in grain spirit for 48 hours before they are redistilled. A pretty intriguing tipple, with a very handsome Gatsby-esque bottle. A fabulous gin to go its eponymous cocktail, though we wouldn't suggest you wing it. (Geddit?)

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Crisp notes of juniper alongside delicate floral sweetness, parma violets, a touch of citrus peel and some green vegetal notes in there too, with a pinch of spice.

Palate: Wonderfully spicy notes, more prominent than on the nose, cardamom shining through and a scattering of cinnamon, with floral notes continuing.

Finish: Spices linger, along with the return of citrus peel.

Aviation Gin Reviews

Cocktail Gin

Sadly I got excited to try this, was more disappointed in myself than the gin, it’s a decent cocktail gin but not just for tonic and enjoying. The taste neat is more like a vodka than a gin

Not a fan of spicy gins, but Aviation is exceptional

Perplexing, as I like English and Indian dry gins, never spicy ones, but this one is so classy it somehow wins me over. The juniper is subdued, theyve added lesser-used botanicals, and the spiciness continues, pushing the pine to the very end. I havent worked out why yet, but this might be the fifth best gin Ive ever tasted (all the others are dry gins). The distillers have clearly made some very good decisions here.

Smooth, unique and pleasent. Part with your salary.

Fantastic gin. This and Foxhole are by far the best I've had.

This gin has the power of resurrection and the charm of a dapper gentleman with superior pigeon breeding skills

Got this for my 45t birthday. The bottle is sublime 30s deco with what feels like machined aviation grade aluminium cap. The palette bursts. I drink it with a splash of Sosa and s single basil leaf. It is excellence in a bottle.

Ouch !

Average gin , tried it neat ouch , better for a cocktail where it’s poor taste can be masked. Very well marketed hides it flaws well ..

Ryan Reynolds Says Otherwise...

Ryan Reynolds acquired an ownership interest in Aviation Gin earlier this year.
He has recently been quoted as saying the following:

"The reason some people don't drink gin is that strong juniper taste. So, after apologizing to each berry individually, we beat the living hell out of them," Reynolds says. "To ensure that heavenly taste, every bottle of Aviation is ordained by the Unitarian Church of Fresno, California. And then, before it departs home, serenaded by the healing music of Sarah McLachlan."

The description states it’s the most intense juniper flavor you’ll ever experience yet reviews state other wise... Mr Reynolds drinks his on the rocks apparently - can’t waiy to try it!!

Not a fan

I love gin. Dry martinis, gin and tonics and Negronis. I have also discovered after a great deal of trial and error and gin buying in Irish and English airports that I really just fancy London dry gin. That said, I have enjoyed many "modern" gins and ancient non dry gins such as old tom. A friend of mine is an investor in this company and I received this bottle gratis. I have say, it tastes OK in martinis, but tastes disgusting in gin and tonics - strangely.

Unexpected flavour. With a tonic, I really get the sarsaparilla coming through. Hints of root beer. I like it but its possible the least conventional gin I've had in awhile.

Aviation Best Among Premiums

I tested all the premium gins on board a cruise ship. Aviation was the best in a Gin and Tonic. I had not seen the brand previously.

For those who don't like gin

A great gin, for people who don't like gin. I love the aura behind it, but it just doesn't taste great to me. To each their own.

What's in a name...?

Love it! But first for itself, and only second 'as a gin'. It seems to me that "gin" and "vodka" are so diversely populated now that they slide into and out of each other, their complex recipes and infusions making it hard to find a 'center' for either without staying locked on tradition. This is one of those gins where, if someone said 'taste this' and you didn't know what you were smelling or drinking, your eyebrows would lift, and you'd either think you'd found heaven, or that something wasn't quite right. For me, heaven.

Not for me I'm afraid

A gin with the juniper somewhat hidden behind what I found a rather odd flavour and a rather harsh edge - not for me unfortunately

10th December 2016

Mmmm - not really

Worth a try and will suit some but not what I was expecting. Compared to Sipsmiths VJOP this has very little juniper in it - imho anyway

Dangerously Smooth

I agree with last review..this is not a London dry gin. But nonetheless makes me appreciate them more for their character...however Aviation is uniquely styled gin that is clean, bright and refreshing. Absolutely enjoyed in a dirty gin martini.

Not your typical London dry

I disagree that this isn't all about the juniper. I'd say juniper takes a back seat with this gin and it has a much smoother, less bright profile than some of the traditional London gins you're used to. Definitely a different profile. From what I've seen, people either love this gin or hate it and I tend to love it. Plus the deco style bottle is cool as fuck.
