This London Dry Gin, repackaged and rejuvenated under new ownership in 2013, takes its name from Boodle's gentleman’s club in St. James's, London and is now produced at the Greenalls distillery.
Famous members of Boodle's gentleman’s club included former Prime Minister Winston Churchill and James Bond author Ian Fleming, which of course makes Boodles an obvious choice for a Vesper.
Churchill also enjoyed gin however and Boodles may have been his favourite brand. I read a story the other day of how Winston added so little vermouth to his Gin Martinis that sometimes a mere glance in the direction of France would suffice!
Couldn't be any smoother. I like that the botanicals do not include any citrus elements, and that the coriander, juniper, etc have a chance to really shine. I have tried most of the best gins and this one is in a tie with Old Raj for my favorite. In the US, it is sold at 45.2%ABV (90.4 Proof). I understand that in Britain, it is sold at 40% ABV or 80 Proof. Neither is particularly weak, although I prefer the higher ABV, the warmth it imparts adds to the enjoyment.
Being a new Gin drinker i appreciate my review may not carry much weight but i put it behind Monkey 47, The Botanist and Sacred in the list of Gins i have enjoyed.
I've enjoyed my first bottle of Boodles for the last couple of weeks, and it's 45.2% alcohol by volume, which I believe equates to 90.4 proof. Weak? Methinks not. Not a bad gin at all...good flavor and snappiness.
Was 80 proof then, as well. (40% ABV) And delicious on ice with a cocktail onion...
The last time I had some it was 40%, and that was in the early 80s. Some people bought it for that reason.
