Bertha’s Revenge Gin Bottling Note

A gin from Ballyvolane House named after Bertha, a Droimeann cow from Kerry said to have been the oldest in the world when she died aged 48 in 1993. The gin uses whey alcohol from Irish dairies as its base with locally foraged botanicals.

The concept originates from Ballyvolane being the Gaelic for 'the place of springing heifers' and botanicals include juniper, coriander, bitter orange, grapefruit, sweet orange, lemon, lime, liquorice, orris, angelica, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, cumin, almond, elderflower, and sweet woodruff.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Almond, hay, dried juniper and orange peel, too. Floral angelica. Cumin spiciness develops.

Palate: Spice arrives first, with plenty of clove and cardamom. Soon becomes creamy and vanilla-y, joined by fresh citrus peels.

Finish: Slightly oily juniper. Lime and liquorice root.

Canadian longing

Loved it when I travelled. Wishing I could get it in Canada

Love it

Absolutely love this gin ... one of the best that I have ever had .
The story about the cow , who lived in Sneem , co Kerry , is true according to my cousins who still live there .
It’s worth a try ..

Nice soft gin with a great taste

Just tried this gin in a gin bar in Bath it reminds me of the taste of cream soda for some reason but I absolutely love it with a bit of chilli in the glass gives it a great taste

A lovely gentle gin

Very soft and velvety and an almost almond finish. I loved it! Could even drink it neat. I wish the bottoms I have smelt, smelt of this gin (references to previous reviews).

Try before you buy!

Definitely think this is one to try before you buy! I’m a real gin lover...favourite Irish gin being Boatyard, but really want to try this just wasn’t sure. Thankfully I found it in a local bar and definitely won’t be be purchasing. It was ok but only as a one off. My friend also didn’t enjoy it .

Match made in Heavan

Tried this the first time as it was recommended by the friendly barman at Atlas Bar in Manchester.
He also recommended the Thomas Henry Cherry Blossom Tonic.
Wow a match made in heaven *****
Tried now its time to Buy a bottle or two.

Brilliant!

Absolutely the best gin I've tried in ages. I'm a massive fan of cardamom in gin and this does all the infusing for you!!

You MUST try it!

Totally different from any other gin; a flavour all of its own. My wife, most of my gin loving friends and I love it. It is our first choice drink and have now drunk over a dozen bottles. Very occasionally; once; we had a friend who didn't like the cardamon small so maybe try a taster but definitely giv it a go.

As above

Excellent gin smooth and subtle.

Complex flavours

Tasted in Ireland, bought several bottles since. Completely different from other gins. If you’re a fan of Gordon’s then Bertha's might not be for you.

Back for a second bottle!!

Being intrigued with the name and lore, I bought a bottle just for myself. I decided to share it with a close friend who's goal is to taste as many varieties of gin as possible. We had varying experiences as the first thing I noticed was the smell of bergamot which is not one of the botanicals. Curious! I found this flavor to be very strong on it's own but shaken with crushed ice for at least thirty seconds with the addition of orange peel it was divine!! Very smooth!

I recently had a holiday party and this friend was invited. He immediately wanted to know where I stashed the BR and proceeded to make a G&T. I should have had him make one for me, but I was into the Sharish Blue Magic G&T at the time...there is always tomorrow!! Thanks Master of Malt!!

Yuck

My husband and I have over 50 gins. We smelt this before we tried it and both looked at each other and burst out laughing. “What does that smell remind you of?” “Butt, there is no other way to describe it”. Literally smells like a**e. Cannot drink it. Sorry. I find the taste to be just as unpleasant too... worst Christmas present ever.

Aptly named

Bertha’s revenge is aptly named. I picture a scullery maid secretly infusing the household’s gin with her smelly week-old socks. I’m sorry but this is the poorest gin i’ve tasted in a long time. Maybe pair back the 18 botanicals - less is more.

Perfect!

Absolutely beautiful, received a bottle from my mum and dad in cork.
Very fragrant, and beautiful on the palate

27th December 2017

22nd December 2017

20th November 2017

Extraordinary

Recommended by barkeeper in Rathmullan House. My wife was very pleased. Bought one in Dublin airport before flying home. One was too less ........

21st September 2017

I had this at Muriel's in Belfast - amazing! Loved it. They served it with cardamom pods in ice. Yum yum.

Loved this gin. I would recommend it to any gin lover.

12th May 2017

glad I tried it and would buy again

Something different and really good.

Don't let the milk put you off

There's no milk in this, the reference is to other dairy produce that this company make. I tried this at Junipalooza and it's a nice gin, then they cropped orange peel in and it's an incredible gin. You won't be disappointed with this it's absolutely delicious.
