A gin from Ballyvolane House named after Bertha, a Droimeann cow from Kerry said to have been the oldest in the world when she died aged 48 in 1993. The gin uses whey alcohol from Irish dairies as its base with locally foraged botanicals.
The concept originates from Ballyvolane being the Gaelic for 'the place of springing heifers' and botanicals include juniper, coriander, bitter orange, grapefruit, sweet orange, lemon, lime, liquorice, orris, angelica, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, cumin, almond, elderflower, and sweet woodruff.
Almond, hay, dried juniper and orange peel, too. Floral angelica. Cumin spiciness develops.
Spice arrives first, with plenty of clove and cardamom. Soon becomes creamy and vanilla-y, joined by fresh citrus peels.
Slightly oily juniper. Lime and liquorice root.
Absolutely the best gin I've tried in ages. I'm a massive fan of cardamom in gin and this does all the infusing for you!!
Totally different from any other gin; a flavour all of its own. My wife, most of my gin loving friends and I love it. It is our first choice drink and have now drunk over a dozen bottles. Very occasionally; once; we had a friend who didn't like the cardamon small so maybe try a taster but definitely giv it a go.
Excellent gin smooth and subtle.
Tasted in Ireland, bought several bottles since. Completely different from other gins. If you’re a fan of Gordon’s then Bertha's might not be for you.
Being intrigued with the name and lore, I bought a bottle just for myself. I decided to share it with a close friend who's goal is to taste as many varieties of gin as possible. We had varying experiences as the first thing I noticed was the smell of bergamot which is not one of the botanicals. Curious! I found this flavor to be very strong on it's own but shaken with crushed ice for at least thirty seconds with the addition of orange peel it was divine!! Very smooth! I recently had a holiday party and this friend was invited. He immediately wanted to know where I stashed the BR and proceeded to make a G&T. I should have had him make one for me, but I was into the Sharish Blue Magic G&T at the time...there is always tomorrow!! Thanks Master of Malt!!
