The Ancient Mariner's London Dry Gin was chosen from more than 25 different recipes, created with 100% British grains and distilled in London. It is named, of course, for Coleridge's famous poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
Nose: Herbal nose with tangy fresh juniper and hints of oily spices.
Palate: Earthy juniper delivery. Dry and crisp, with a good interplay between the other botanicals. Hints of citrus develop.
Finish: Peppery finish. Quite oily.

For me the botanicals don't shine through the ABV enough to make this great. Still very nice and a dash of decent tonic does enhance it!

At 50% it tastes incredibly clean but is not as complex as the other gins I have in my collection. A small tipple left me with a rather unpleasant headache, perhaps dehydration or a coincidence...

I took a risk on this gin based on the tasting notes and the packaging and it was definitely a risk worth taking. Ancient Mariner is excellent staight, or mixed and has enough strength to come through with a good tonic, yet is smooth enough to be sipped straight.I disagree slightly with the notes above and would say this gin has a fairly heavy texture throughout, which is very much at odds with the delicate balance of refreshing flavours. This is by no means a bad thing and I would highly recommend this gin.Final verdict is that this gin is one to be savoured so best taken straight. The half mark comes off for the bottle, which I've found is rather sloppy when trying to pour precise amounts. I overcame this tiny shortfall with use of a pouring disc.
