Bathtub Gin Bottling Note

An extraordinary award-winning gin from Ableforth's. Made using the traditional method of Cold Compounding (or in layman’s terms – infusing). Very high quality copper pot-still spirit is infused with ingredients including juniper, orange peel, coriander, cassia, cloves and cardamom, with the length of the compounding period controlled entirely by periodic sampling.

The result is an extraordinary gin, lightly tinted by the botanicals, and with a flavour which is both bold, and perfumed all at once. Sure to be a hit with amateur and professional mixologists alike.

Packaged using brown paper, string and wax, the presentation puts us in mind of a Victorian apothecary!

Ableforth's Southside recipe:

50ml Ableforth's Bathtub Gin
20ml fresh lemon juice
10ml sugar syrup
Mint leaves
Shake all ingredients over ice, fine strain into a coupe glass and top with soda

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: An initially juniper-rich bouquet is backed up with a solid backbone of rich grain spirit. Top notes of cardamom and orange blossom are evident with just a suggestion of cinnamon.

Palate: The initial focus is juniper, but the earthier botanicals make themselves known in the initial palate too. Mouthfeel is exceptionally viscous and creamy – this is good spirit, and it makes itself known.

Finish: The juniper subsides and gives way to cardamom and cinnamon, with a late resurgence from orange peel.

Overall: A most unusual, but quite entrancing gin.

Bathtub Gin Reviews

Revolting, bitter. Just nothing about it that is pleasant

2nd October 2020

lovely but not a fan of new "cork"

This is my favourite gin very smooth and have bought as presents to other who also loved it. My only comment is that they have change the "cork" within the last year or so and I now find it very stiff to remove

10th September 2020

It has a very distinct flavor, like no other gin I've tried. Unfortunately it's not for me, a bit bitter, I've had better gins at the same price point.

13th August 2020

Nowt special

A perfectly reasonable gin for a G and T but Some supermarket ones at half the price are as good.

15th June 2020

Bathe in it!

Stop buying this gin!
We want it all!
For us, the best yet.

10th June 2020

The Gin that made me like Gin

I've never liked Gin, it's always had a bitter, almost chemical taste. I picked this up as part of the Negroni bundle, the only way I could stomach gin. I went from having this in Negronis, to Martinis, Gin and Tonic, and finally drinking it over ice. It's incredibly smooth, floral, and drinkable. Aberforths Bathtub Gin has become the staple Gin of my home bar, simply for being the first Gin I could stomach. I actually like Gin now, and I blame this bottle.

14th May 2020

Surprisingly suberb

I brought a sample of this gin as I didn't know what to expect. It's delicious! I will certainly be buying a full bottle of this.

20th April 2020

Favourite gin without question

I still drink other gins, but this is so much better than anything else out there. Way more interesting flavour, and just a lot more going on than what you would get in a distilled gin.

14th April 2020

Delicious gin. Given as a present and as an avid gin drinker, this one was a great gift and very well received. Really great!

28th March 2020

one glass is enough for anyone.

opening the bottle is the real challenge. very bitter on the palate... eventually.

24th January 2020

My favourite gin

Not the only gin I drink, but if I’m at a bar and want a Negroni then this is always my first call. Just way more flavour than any other gin I’ve tried.

Beautiful stuff.

Spirit heavy, spicy and smooth finish.

Tried in a martini to begin, as that is my baseline. I know how I like my martinis, and the gin is centre-stage. Juniper takes the spotlight, then creamy peels and a spicy finish. Well-rounded, spirit forward (stands to be mixed) and highly aromatic.

3rd December 2019

Best gin ever!

My favourite Gin 😍. I am a gin lover and this is in my top 3 without a doubt.

19th November 2019

The best ever!!!!!

After trying about 70 different gins, aimed at a gin 'n tonic style, with many many side by side tastings, my wife and I crowned this the best gin ever! Both of us we in agreeable. The. Best. Ever

Beautiful gin one of my favourites this year

16th April 2019

Another class

This is for people who LOVE flavour and can appreciate how gin is made - all of the flavours come through beautifully, it's in a class of it's own!!

10th April 2019

Fruity calpol

Quite fruity and spicy too. Almost like hand sanitizer.

16th November 2018

Tastes like it’s been made in a bathtub with cleaning products chucked in for good measure

Yuk!!!! Sooooo harsh.

10th September 2018

I am a gin expert and this is top draw

This gin has a great taste.

10th September 2018

Great gin

Nuff said!

4th September 2018

Fantastic gin, showing the world that the old way is the best way!

2nd September 2018

Never again - an expensive mistake - should have tried a sample.

I do not think I have EVER had something so disgusting in my life!!
I passed the bottle on to friends who love their gin, and I am afraid this then went down the sink!! Enough said.

6th August 2018

Wonderful gin

This really is a fantastic gin. The only drawback that I can see being that the brown paper "wrapping" makes it difficult to tell when you need to order in another bottle!

7th February 2018

This was a Christmas Pressie from hubby and We both find it a delightful drink. The flavours are enchanting to a new gin drinker at the age of 66!

13th January 2018

Xmas Gin

Awesome. Tastes like Christmas in a gin. To be eaten with mince pies.

5th January 2018

I had this how I’d have a Hendricks with a Mediterranean tonic and a couple of slices of cucumber. Bloody gorgeous!!

30th December 2017

So Refreshing!

A unique gin which has a strong juniper base with orange, cinnamon and a hint of ginger. Best served with plenty of ice, 1 part gin to 3 or 4 parts Fever Tree Elderflower Tonic. Add a slice of tangerine and some scraped tangerine zest.

14th October 2017

Spot on!

Amazing Gin! Mixed with Elderflower Tonic, a slice of orange and ice, absolute perfection

11th August 2017

Simply the best gin I've tasted, and I've tried quite a few !,,,,

Amazing, my brother gave me a bottle for my 70th birthday, after my first taste I immediately hid it from my husband, just too good to share

30th July 2017

Probably my favourite gin to date

Unusual and unique. Unlike any gin I have previously tasted

28th July 2017

Beautifully made gin

This stuff really is exquisite, and is now officially my mum's favorite gin as well.

23rd June 2017

Cracking stuff

This is just incredible - I keep ordering it again and again because we go through it at an incredible rate.

14th May 2017

Really good

Fantastically round and full of flavour, totally unlike any other gin I've tasted and all the better for it. Top marks.

14th May 2017

Absolutely love this

It's not for everyone, as is clear from the negative reviews here, but it definitely is for me. Much more flavour than other gins I've tried, and smashing with tonic. Love it.

19th April 2017

Bathtub cleaner

Rough as old boots. Overpowering cheap base spirit not smooth, not nice.

10th April 2017

Amazing gin! Good enough to enjoy on ice

24th February 2017

Shame - but just wrong

Not good........

23rd February 2017

If you like 1960 bathrooms this will bring back all those cheap guesthouse memories

It is bathtub, white melamine bath sides, blue mold on a nylon shower curtain and amber soap.

13th February 2017

Christmas gin.

It's smooth but smells like Christmas in a glass.
Really enjoyed this.

19th January 2017

from the packaging to the Cork popping satisfyingly to the absolutely gorgeous aroma and smooth taste. this gin is seriously the works. dont listen to the negative reviews. its stunning. I had with ice and a squeeze of lime. mmmmm

18th December 2016

A very pleasant Gin!

I must admit that had this not been in the advent calendar I would not have bought it as I always believed the Bathtub brand to be a bit gimmicky. I would have been missing out on a cracking Gin though. Well balanced and very pleasant.

5th December 2016

Estelle hill

Brilliant gin. Tasted best with gentian tonic and good also neat over ice. Best gin I've had in a very long time!!

Just found Bathtub Gin!

Took my daughter for her birthday to Earls in Altringham yesterday evening ...... absolutely superb; and I am a Malt Whiskey lady ...... will definitely purchase. Would very highly recommend.

26th May 2016

I love this stuff!

I love this stuff!

23rd May 2016

Do yourself a favour and get the SAMPLE first !!!!!

I'm a Plymouth man myself or Martin Miller etc etc

I read the rave and neg reviews, then decided on the Sample bottle

It is a little different - but NOT that different :)

I like it - certainly not the undrinkable that the "Had High Hopes for" review said - everyone to their own of course

Would I buy a bottle now tasted it - undecided

I like Plymouth !!! :) and that is the problem - for G&T as I drink, I've found my drink, why change ?

19th May 2016

best ever gin

this gin is the best ever ... slight colour to it.. tastes divine.. like nothing ive ever tried &I can honestly never drink ordinary gin again at hme.. once you taste it .. you will be hooked!!! its amazing!!!

3rd May 2016

Loved it's unique flavour :-)

22nd March 2016

Fabulous flavour with strong citrus tail.

8th March 2016

Just so much rounder and fuller than other gins I've tried, it really does taste different from traditional distilled gin and I really like it. I still drink other gin, but this is now my go-to when it comes to the category. Great stuff.

29th January 2016

Really rounded flavour

I've never tried another gin that comes close to the big, rounded, mouth-filling intensity that this gin delivers. It's got all the familiar juniper and pine notes from other gins, but a massive, almost mouth-coating richness. I can only assume that this is a result of the botanicals that are being used in a different way, but all I can say is that the result is nothing short of spectacular. Tried this in a G&T, and it was great, but by far the best place for this gin is in cocktails. Try it in a Negroni and you'll never go back.

25th January 2016

Lovely stuff!

Last year our son bought us a bottle of him that had been in whisky barrels - I gave it back to him as I didn't like the whisky taste. He won't be getting this yard bottle back as it is lovely stuff!

3rd January 2016

Excellent Gin

Very botanical any creamy

27th December 2015

Not sure.. yet

Individual taste that stands out from other gins... but I'm not too sure if I like it yet...
I'm not sure if it's trying too hard to be too individual?

24th November 2015

Introduced to this a couple of weeks ago by the lovely Landlady of the St Brides Pub in Blackfriars and I'm obsessed - serve over ice with bitter lemon and a slice of orange! Wonderful

20th November 2015

Had High Hopes

Wow, I really WANTED to, I wanted to LOVE this gin. Friends know I'm collecting craft gins (Scottish when possible) and the cooler and more interesting and perhaps "decorative" the bottle, the better (in my case if it looks like an old style bottle). My husband mentioned this gin to me and before I knew it, a bottle was delivered to my door.

Everything about this gin should have worked, perfect on paper as the saying goes. It had a cool bottle, it was very popular and friends and other reviwerers were loving it. So, I bypassed my usual reading of the botanicals used and placed an order. Of course I'd like it. Sadly though, a few days later, when the weekend came around and my husband and I chose to chill out at home, I went and made a G&T using my "new" gin. As I said, the reviews, no matter where I read them, were outstanding and one said it was the fastest selling gin on the market right now. So, it MUST be good, so...with a silent "slainte" I took in the first sip...and soon all of my best ladies manners flew out the window as I popped off the couch, quickly running to the kitchen sink to relieve my taste buds of the flavour. :( ... oh maaaan :(

There are some interesting things going on with craft gins these days but then there some that are "interesting" in a completely different way. The first thing I picked up as I took a sip and the flavours landed upon my palette, was the distinctively sweet taste of cinnamon. Cinnamon? Then cardamon. It was, in my opinion, a bit too much. It overpowered every molecule of the liquid in my glass and try as a may, I cannot seem to tolerate this gin. Drown it in tonic? No. Add a splash of Edinburgh's Raspberry Gin Liqueur? No. Nothing works. As a result, I have a nearly full bottle of this gin taking up valuable real estate in my utility room cupboard, mixed amonth the random collection of whiskies given to my husband as gifts from his patients over his career.

I do hope to find someone who likes it so I can ask them if they'd like the rest of my bottle. I'm certain someone I know will like it? I'm sure it's just me that doesn't like it?

It is my fault, I read reviews and not details. My taste buds are fairly sensitive, especially with cinnamon and cardamon. I like both of these spices, but in other contexts and definitely not in my gin.

I'm sorry Bathtub Gin folks, this was not meant for me.

13th November 2015

Not My Thing

I know I must be the only one who feels this way, but this was a gift from a friend who knows I collect quality gins. Wow, this was not my thing. I couldn't wait to taste the gin that was being reviewed so highly and everyone was tallking about.

Sadly, my first try at Bathtub just made me immediately want to be sick. While I love cardamom and cinnamon in their proepr elements, in a gin they were over powering and dominated the flavor of the entire drink. I felt so bad, but I poured the drink right down the drain and the rest of the bottle sits, to this day, under the sink in my utility room.

I know that I'm gonna be the rare human that reviews this gin badly and for that I feel bad. But this is my honest review. If you like or love it, that's great. Personally I will keep to my favorites, Botanist, Rock Rose and Edinburgh Seaside to name but a few.

Sorry to be the rain on everyone's parade.

20th October 2015

The best there is...

I tried this and never looked back. 1 large gin is more than enough for a relaxing evening. Distinctive flavour, aroma and very smooth.

17th October 2015

I purchased this based on reviews and more reviews. I found the finish far too cinnamon based to enjoy as a gin. This may well be someone else's happy place, but as a traditionalist, it's not the gin for me. Boo :(

2nd October 2015

Not to be ruined with cheap tonic

Hendricks is my preferred tipple, but I wanted to try another unusual gin. This is absolutely fantastic, Fever Tree tonic only, none of your cheap harsh tonics and don't waste it on those who think supermarket gin is acceptable! Love it.

8th September 2015

A master gin!

I pride myself on an outstanding Gin palate, I've been through the Hendricks cucumber phase, bloom strawberry phase, Blackwoods delicious dhetland Isle phase, I swear this Gin for my palate is perfect, it is unique in the Gin world, I love pepper and juniper, this gin is extraordinary, the closest example I've seen with the same taste is probably williams chase which gives me an awful headache! I've introduced several family members and friends and they agree this is the most unique and tasty gin they have ever had, price is obviously higher than most, however for my mind it's worth it! oh wow! well done Proff cornelious 😄

19th May 2015

I'll take Hendricks gin over this any time, way too much clove. Utterly destroys a lovelt gin tonic.

7th May 2015

Mr Mark Woodcock AKA "Marra"

Quite simply one of the two best gins in the world, (the other is Bathtub Old Tom Gin).
My preference is just Fevertree light tonic with ice, (no fruit).
Thank you very much Masters Of Malt and thank you very much Professor Cornelius Ampleforth.

25th March 2015

Overpowered by the underlying spirit

I've never understood the wall to wall 5* ratings that I see for bathtub, the so-called professional reviews tend to be a little less favourable and for once i'm with them. Whilst perfectly OK i just find it an odd experience of two conflicting sides. There is a muscular spirit badly hidden within and it struggles to stay under control, it also means its the bitter and more fragrant of the botanicals that come to the fore rather than a wholesome bouqeut, which i must say i do prefer from a gin. As a result the botanicals carry a synthetic taste almost as if this were a spirit mixer with some sort of botanical mixer. All very confused but for me the strong grainy spirit really bullies everything else, Not bad at all but not 5* either

3rd February 2015

Best Christmas present ever!

I was expecting another bottle of cheap perfume for Christmas so was delighted to be given this bottle of fabulous gin instead! I had never tried it before but I've been won over by it's delicate flavours. I've been drinking it with Fever tree tonic water which doesn't spoil the taste and I would ideally serve it with a bit of orange peel and slightly chilled tonic but no ice. This gin is amazing with or without tonic and makes a certain well known brand of gin from the local pub taste like petrol in comparison.. If you think you don't like gin you have to try this. There's a great pub in Brighton which serves this and Monkey 47 (and around 38 other gins) which is well worth a visit if you want a super gin experience. 10/10!

2nd January 2015

gin at it's best.

Absolutely bloody Georgous.....

30th December 2014

23rd December 2014

winning gift

If you need a gift for someone who loves gin or gin and tonics, this is it. everyone i've gifted this to raves!

19th November 2014

I'm not one to usually review things nor a gin expert however this is simply amazing. The flavours are fantastic it is a very smooth creamy gin, there's a definite orange peel flavour which is finished off with a warm spicy cinnamon and clove taste on the palate. I think this is going to be perfect for cold winter nights!

23rd October 2014

So so good .....

... it is almost a sin to spoil it with any mixer!Savour as is - because you are worth it ;-)

27th June 2014

veyr nice

a very tasty gin

29th March 2014

Fantastic gin, completely different from others i've tasted and i've found it works well with a slice of orange.

19th March 2014

Bathtub Gin

10/10 Amazing Gin.

13th March 2014

My favourite Gin - period.

13th March 2014

need to try!

I love the botanist gin, especially in a martini, and would love to try this too, the reviews sound amazing, think it may have to be a Christmas present to myself :)

16th November 2013

Update from above

Just been experimenting - this gin makes the best gin and coke. It tastes like a sort of adult Dr. Pepper.

25th September 2013

A Unique and Pleasant Gin

A nice gin to drink straight or with tonic; in cocktails it seems out of place. It's a fine gin, and whilst is better than most high street products, it isn't the the best for my tastes.

I seem to get a harsher cinnamon taste initially - perhaps a little too much cinnamon for my liking, then subtle orange in the finish. I think I'd prefer it the other way around.

The packaging is quirky and interesting and would make a nice gift. I think it would be better if a thin wire was placed around the cap and teased through the hole to make for easy, uniform opening.

Worth a try once, and would definitely recommend doing so - But I don't think I'd buy it again.

16th September 2013

He said I didn't know Gin!

A friend said I didn't know gin, he was right! This is sublime with or without tonic. A whole new taste experience.

15th September 2013

Can anyone advise how it compares to The Botanist?

17th July 2013

You think of Gin as a cheap liquor, but this bottle was well worth the money!

17th June 2013

Must place an order

All these reviews are so positive that I must order na mbottle. My only questionmark before I taste it for myself is that someone said its the next best Gin to Hendricks. When I had a bottle of Hendricks a year or so ago I was completely underwhelmed.

23rd May 2013

I drank a bottle and suffered no depression

My spirits were lifted by the consumption of this spirit. Let it sit in the glass with some ice and quality tonic for a bit and the flavours will meld together. The orange peel flavour is delicious.

19th May 2013

You like Gin?

If you've never tasted this gin you're missing out. Incredibly smooth and complex flavour. Keep the cooking gin for your guests and keep this for yourself!

28th January 2013

I can't say much more, this is a truly wonderful gin, buy wait, don't, just in case I run out!

11th January 2013

Can.'t wait to try it!

Was given a bottle for my 50th last month and not yet opened it. The comments above excite me so will let you know how i get on.

5th January 2013

Makes a fantastic gin and tonic, especially with a slice of lime, you can really taste the botanicals in this gin and it is incredibly smooth, very drinkable. Next to Hendricks its my new favourite gin!

4th January 2013

New No.1

I thought Bombay Sapphire was a step above the average gin, but this takes things to a new level. This gin is too good to mix with anything else. Have it neat and savour the flavour.

26th December 2012

Simply Devine

Wonderful on the palate and very strong. The best G&T ever!

4th November 2012

my new favourite gin.

25th September 2012

Very nice with tonic, it really brings out the orangey flavour, my favourite gin to have with tonic, perhaps too strong a flavour to mix into cocktails but on it's own it's brilliant.

21st August 2012

fabulous for gin and tonic lovers

i bought this as a gift for a friend and she LOVED it! she said it made the most delicious gin and tonic she's ever had.

20th July 2012

I. Hate. Gin. But I was given a dram of this along with a bottle of Rumbullion and it's very nice. Nothing amazing, but the simple fact that I liked any form of gin makes this a bit special in my view.

12th June 2012

Not my favourite

Think the colour put me off - actually reminded me of bathwater. Will stick to Millers.

21st May 2012

Re: Not the only one

That's not quite right - Oxley is distilled at low temps by pulling a vacuum on it so it is still boiled\distilled just not with heat - so is not a cold compound like bathtub.

15th May 2012

The drink of the gods!

The best way to drink it is with sugar and lemon juice. It is heavenly!

26th March 2012

Not the only one

Oxley Classic English Dry Gin is also cold infused. ;-)

20th March 2012

Worth every penny!

I love gin and was attracted by the description, reviews and the 'olde english' packaging. This gin is sublime and worth every penny. The aroma when you open the bottle is everything it describes. You will not be disappointed, this is by far my most favourite gin to date! Enjoy!

18th February 2012

So much flavour!

I bought a bottle for a work colleague but i drank it myself with the wife. She absolutely loves it so much we've purchased a further six bottles. The flavour is so intense. Just love it to bits!!!

12th February 2012

If life throws you a lemon. Make a gin and tonic

O.M.G. The best gin ever had, and had a few.

25th December 2011

Huge Flavour, incredible value

I bought this gin for my boss as a thank you, and i have to say this is one of the best gins i have ever tasted, complex flavors and a slight anise sense to the finish , but not overpoweringly so. incredible in a martini, straight from the freezer, 2 drops of Noilly Prat, no ice what so ever.... delicious. you have to try this!!!

23rd October 2011

A greta rare gin

the best gin and tonic gin I've ever had. I've tried a lot of premium gins and this beats them all.

27th September 2011

Insane, but delicious!

Very Viscous, Slightly Tinted, and with an absolutely huge flavor. This is a really good Gin!
