58 and Co London Dry Gin is created in Haggerston using a single shot distillation method with a gorgeous alembic still, 100% British wheat spirit and nine carefully selected botanicals. This smashing selection includes juniper, coriander, lemon, pink grapefruit, vanilla, orris, cubeb pepper, bergamot and angelica. An ace gin for cocktails, this one. We're particularly fond of using it in an Aviation...
Good balance of citrus and enjoyably leafy notes. A touch of sweetness to it, too.
Quite dry, with pine-y juniper at the fore, well backed-up by citrus.
Peppery with a lasting hint of juniper.
I bought this Gin in an ongoing effort to find a cheaper more cost effective alternative to Salcombe Gin which I love for its Super clean fresh taste. 58 Gin on paper looked promising and even on first smell was hopeful. The tasting notes by master of malt are far more accurate than the description in my opinion but what ruins this Gin for me is what the tasting notes call "enjoyable leafy notes". These to me dominate everything else about this Gin on the palate and I'm left with the taste of dusty old apple skin. Tasted with tonic and Lemon at first, thought the lemon was off, tried it plain, same result, tried with cucumber and voila the cucumber completely masked over this horrid green flatness but then all I could taste was cucumber ie. all the citrus freshness was lost. Conker Gin at £35 is the only Gin I would suggest close to this price point but realistically its in another league and frankly 58 Gin deserves to be thoroughly in the mid 20's price bracket well below Sipsmith. It frustrates me one can't buy a good Gin for well under £30 the same way one can with Vodka (Platinum Russian Standard / Stoli Gold) or Tequila (El Jimador). Maybe I'm being too fussy and I should buy expensive tonic to mask the fact that the alcohol isn't that great...
