Bodegas Argueso Sherry

Bodegas Argueso, in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Andalusia, Spain, dates back to the late 19th century. This winery is known for its Sherry wines, especially Manzanilla. It grew from a local business to an internationally recognised name in winemaking.

The History

Bodegas Argueso started in 1822. Founder León de Argüeso y Argüeso opened a small grocery store in Sanlúcar. He expanded into Sherry production and maturation, sourcing from local vineyards. By 1909, the family-owned vineyards like Pago de las Monjas. This marked the start of their Sherry empire.

Sanlúcar de Barrameda is critical to Argueso's wines. It is part of the "Sherry Triangle" and has a unique climate. This climate creates "flor," a layer of yeast important in Manzanilla production. Manzanilla is dry, light, and slightly salty, reflecting the town's sea breezes.

Maturation

The winery uses the Solera system for ageing. This traditional method blends younger and older wines for consistent taste. Bodegas Argueso's solera system uses American oak barrels for ageing. This ensures high-quality and distinct-tasting Sherries.

Besides Manzanilla, Bodegas Argueso makes Fino, Amontillado, Oloroso, and Palo Cortado. Each has unique flavours and ageing processes. The Fino and Manzanilla age under flor. Amontillado starts like Fino then ages oxidatively for a nuttier taste. Oloroso ages oxidatively from the start, leading to a fuller wine. Palo Cortado combines Amontillado's aroma with Oloroso's body.

Innovation is key at Argueso. They blend tradition with modern techniques in viticulture and oenology. They focus on sustainability, promoting biodiversity and reducing waste.

Bodegas Argueso values wine tourism. They offer tours of their cellars and tastings. Visitors learn about Sherry and the region's culture and food.

Today, Bodegas Argueso balances tradition and innovation. It is committed to quality and heritage. It offers drinkers a taste of history. As they look forward, Argueso stays true to the values that defined its past. Each bottle is not just a drink, but an experience that honours Sherry's legacy.
