Yoichi Single Malt

The latest Yoichi single malt will replace both the previous NAS release and the remaining age statement whiskies. The change comes as demand continues to stretch Nikka's aged stock, with this new Yoichi Single Malt (made of of whiskies of various ages) aimed at representing this special distillery's direct-coal-heated, peated yet fruity style.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Producer's Tasting Note:
Nose: Full-bodied, smooth. A mellow peat softly coats the aromatic palette at first, growing more powerful with time, as smoke, soot and salty notes transcend the initial nose. The aromas then evolve towards candied citrus fruit (lemon, orange), black liquorice and spices (nutmeg, ginger), and opens up with roots and dried twig aromas. Heady and floral (carnation, iris), it grows increasingly complex.
Palate: Firm, powerful. A well-balanced attack gives equal footing to aromas of peat, smoke, spices, fresh fruit (melon, kiwi) and nuts (almond, walnut), which it delivers in spades. The mid-palate starts off with chocolate notes, but the peat soon takes the lead once again.
Finish: Long, silky. Extremely mature, it overflows with ripe fruit (pear, Mirabelle plum, apple). The peat starts taking on an herbaceous and malty character, while the salty flavours gives the finish plenty of depth and coastal freshness. The final nose offers menthol, spicy (coriander, dill) and earthy (leather, chestnuts) notes.

Reviews for Yoichi Single Malt
Splendid
Peat, fruit and some subtle sweetness. Just perfect with a little ice. A great find!

The spirit of Yoichi has lost none of its potency
Nose - Smoke, sea-brine, nutmeg, dried or candied orange, in that order of prevalence.
Palate - Heathery smokiness, dried fruits, walnuts, chocolate, clove. Full bodied and rewarding, well worth savoring.
Finish - Long, smooth, and nuanced, fruit and that herby smoke slowly give way to slight eucalyptus tones and leather, brine slowly fading throughout.

Unlike many distilleries producing singles in Japan I can't tell that the younger profile has hurt Yoichi at all, in fact as heretical as it seems to say it may even be a little bit better balanced on my palate than the youngest of their age statements were while remaining absolutely characteristic of the range.

Very smooth with just the right amount of smoke
I thought I'd try something different from the usual Scottish single malts and I'm glad I did because this is a lovely smooth whisky with a perfect amount of smoke. Not quite as smoky as Arran's Machrie Moor offering if that helps. It's quite heavy and silky and I find it best without any water at all.

This one is being added to my favourite's list.

Even unaged this is brilliant
Nose: Very fresh citrus sweet and slightly sulphuric.

Palate: Initially dry spice almost tannic in effect followed by a gentle fruit that settles on the tongue like soil absorbing rain.

After: Tropical fruit pineapple, kiwi and lime. Long balanced finish still lingering after you overcome a distraction.
