William Larue Weller 12

Buffalo Trace's stunning bourbon William Larue Weller, named after the man famed for being the first to create "wheated bourbon", in which the spicy rye grain is substituted for wheat in the mashbill. The result is a smooth, supple little sippin' whiskey.

Reviews for William Larue Weller 12 Year Old
Well worth the hype...
This was the only "limited offering" bottle I set my sights on for 2018. With the Antique Collection price range hitting "Ludicrous Speed", I decided to focus on something just as special (IMHO) that did not require selling Grandma's teeth. Fragrant floral and fruit notes dominate while the buttery oak and brown sugar follow closely. You couldn't get any smoother with 50 grit sandpaper either. At $299 US per 1.75 L, this was still an investment that only an awesome wife like mine wouldn't give you "The Look" over, but I don't feel like I was financially violated just to keep up with the hipster trends. On a working man's budget, you can't get any better.

Yeah
Beautiful whiskey. Smooth oakey taste, with a nice after linger taste that holds for the right time. Stupid bottle though, had to cork it after.

Good stepping stone Whiskey
For AU$220, I would have expected a fair bit more. Two dimensional in my opinion. Undoubtedly smooth with softness...but where is the complexity?
Probably, I.M.H.O, a very poor 'Persons' "PAPPY'S".

Substitue Pappy
So I've been scouting around for Pappy substitutes and this is pretty much it. Not as complex as some of the older Pappys and Family Reserves but it has that classic Pappy Cognac/sauternes sweet grape character, which is not in any other Bourbons I've tasted. It's basically the same mash bill. I'm guessing this is pretty much the same as Van Winkle 12 year old. This will become a regular in my cabinet, but snap them up because they are almost as rare now!

Wonderfully smooth
Drinks like a fine brandy, forget the ice.

Surprising
Wonderful bourbon, beautifully sweet and extremely well balanced, there's a lot to be said for wheated bourbon.

Compared to Van Winkle 12 year Lot B
My understanding is that the people from Pappy Van Winkle recently confirmed that the 12yr old Weller is the same juice as the Van Winkle Lot B 12 year old. Check pricing on both and you'll find a significant difference. I've just purchased a bottle of the Weller and am interested to see if it tastes the same. The Van Winkle 12 yr is a phenomenal bourbon so if Weller is indeed the same nectar, I'm their newest fan. Cheers

Discovery
I can't claim to be an expert but I am swept away by this whiskey, smooth tastey and a long way away from the aggressive bourbons I've had before. Almost akin to Calvados. Wonderful discovery. I'm surprise that there aren't more reviews form more accomplished sippers than me.
