Tomatin 18 Year Old Oloroso Sherry Casks

An 18 year old from the Tomatin distillery, finished in Spanish oak Oloroso sherry butts.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

The nose is quite punchy and of good body. There are notes of chewy grape and sultana with winter spice; cloves and cinnamon. There are notes of vanilla fudge and a most supple of smokes, weaving gracefully in cut grasses and apple peels. The palate is quite sweet and full. There are notes of barley sugar and honeycomb. Hints of chocolate orange and cocoa dusted liberally on toasty oak. The finish is long and powerful with a dry, chewy oak and a touch of pepper.

    Nose

Rich and sherried, with orchard, citrus and dried fruit – apples, oranges and sultanas.

    Palate

Sweet and honeyed, with a backbone of citrus, fruit cake, chocolate and spice.

    Finish

Long and warming spice fades to leave fruit and chocolate.

    Subtle But Brilliant

We live in a very unsubtle time, where instant gratification is demanded on all fronts. In the world of whisky, this is reflected in the prominence of whiskies such as most of the Islays that immediately grab you by the throat and seize your attention. While I love Islay whiskies too, it is too bad that whiskies of a more subdued mien such as this one are overlooked. Tomatin is not a sexy name or a distillery with a hot reputation, but it produces excellent whiskies, and this is probably the best of the batch. Somewhat cloaked and shy on the nose, but the palate picks up steam, and the finish lingers long and sweet. And the price is great too. So, give this one a chance, you peatheads, and you might be surprised.

    BEST VALUE

Was at the liquor store and saw this 18 yr old bottle prices at $54.99 (same as the Laddie10), and thought to give it a shot. Had my bother and three of my mates over. Cracked it open and I was VERY pleased. Maybe I set my expectations low given the price, but it nailed it. The first sip is a bit harsh in the front, but the flavors on the pallet and the aftertaste just kept better and smoother. We ended up drinking the whole bottle. I never thought that the first phrase I use to describe an 18 yr old is BEST VALUE, but this one nailed it for sure. Tried on the rocks, and it is not nearly as flavorful as neat + stones.

    Why pay more

Tasted this very fine dram at the distillery priced at £59.00 then bought from masters of malt instead.

An excellent clean tasting whisky has got alot of good flavours coming through with a subtle smokiness just coming through, ticks all the boxes.
