Ledaig 10

The Tobermory Distillery on the picturesque Isle of Mull isn't home to just unpeated whisky. It also makes superbly smoky single malt under the name of Ledaig (that name isn't simply a coincidence, by the way - Ledaig was one of the distillery's previous names!). Distilled using the same pot stills as the classic unpeated Tobermory expression, just with peated barley instead, the whisky boasts plumes of rich, earthy, almost medicinal smoke, with underlying fresh fruit and crushed spice notes. This particular expression ages for 10 years before bottled at the very specific strength of 46.3% ABV.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Quite light and well-balanced. There is a very soft peat with a gentle smoke. Notes of barley and malt extract, with walnut and pine oil and a hint of iodine, dried fruit and nuts.

Palate Medium-bodied and quite rich. There are notes of spice and smoke gathering above the charred oak. The peat is quiet and dry with a touch of black pepper and earth.

Finish Medium-length and slightly smoky with spice.

Reviews for Ledaig 10 Year Old
Superb
Man, I think Tobermory might be my favourite distillery. Ledaig Rioja Series is in my top 5 drams, this one isn't far off. When I want to give peat a rest, Tobermory 12 does the trick. About this dram - smoky nose with vanilla biscuits. Fruity palate with smoke, salt, caramel. The peat is there, but with understated elegance. Smoky finish, but sweet, almost like choc pudding. You just can't go wrong picking up a bottle of Ledaig.

Where did the smoke go?
I drank a bottle over a month and waited til the end to review. The first measure from the bottle was incredibly smoky but thereafter this experience disappeared. It is a light bodied malt, the peat is balanced by fruity sweetness and does not dominate. It is easy to drink but I do not find it complex. I do not think it comparable with Islay malts, I love Ardbeg 10yo to which this does not compare. There are some medicinal phenolic notes on the nose and finish. Overall not exciting enough.

North Coast Islay in the house.
Salty on thenose with the merest whiff of a sherry butt. Some nice grassy/buttery tones in there also.
Saltiness explodes in the mouth with some toffe aftertones enhanced by a little watering down. It can take the water; bottled at a decent percentage.
All in all not a bad dram, reminiscent of Bunnahabain and other north coast Islays; not a lot of peat smoke in there at all.

Easy sipper
Very nice peated scotch. Ardberg is my usual go-to but Ledaig is a reminder you can get some truly excellent peated whiskies outside of Islay. The only problem is every time I open the bottle I have a hard time putting it away again

Honestly
The previous reviewer should stick to the seriously coloured Lagavulin and leave this non coloured and non chill filtered superbly made whisky to us unserious folk.

Ledaig 10
Every time I have a dram of this whisky I am shocked by its quality…
If you like complex peated whisky, Ledaig 10 is very hard to beat

Pleasant and Gentle - Nothing Spectacular
As it says in the heading, this is a very kind and nice whisky which won't remain in your memory for very long. Reasonable VFM, but you could do a little better for the money.

My favourite peat 10 year old.
Ledaig 10 is now by far my favourite 10 year old peat whisky. The depth of character and complexity is testament to a well crafted whisky, evident of only the finest ingredients and barrels and also no added colouring and non chilled filtered. I appreciate peat whisky isn’t for everyone but peat whisky lovers who haven’t tried Ledaig 10 don’t know what delight they’re missing out on.

A savoury and serious character. I'd prefer a touch of sweetness to round it off
A lighter colour which I always find a little disappointing for a serious spirit, but in no way affected flavour!

On the nose; cherry and peat

Initial tasting; simple sugary sweetness with no "sweetness of..." nuances, which I found disappointing.
Sourness, or sharpness of sherbet; more sharp than lemon, but not overpowering to cause a face spasm.

Sea salt came through, followed by smoke and a savoury finish.

With water, a floral aroma with a real presence of pear in the tasting, followed by the same smokey savoury finish.

8/10; it is a serious sipper that doesn't bring an ounce of sweetness, meaning it might possibly be good for use as a serious old fashioned cocktail dare I say?

My 2nd favourite; Lagavulin 16 brought more nostalgia and sweetness to the table, but less initial crispness.

Yummy, yummy Whisky.
A superb and well peated Whisky competing with some of the best from Islay, it definately tasted at it’s best when 50% of the bottle was completed.
