The One Orange Wine Cask

The Lakes Distillery has done something quite unusual here, and finished its The One blended whisky in casks which previously held Orange wine! This particular Orange wine is pretty much what is sounds like, white wine macerated with orange peel, known as 'Vino de Naranja' and from Huelva in Andalucía. Just to confuse you other types of Orange wine are made, which do not use actual oranges. First-fill American oak casks were seasoned with said Orange wine (the one with actual oranges), and used to finish the whisky. Just 2,994 bottles of the zesty spirit were released at 46.6% ABV.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Orange marmalade and a touch of white grape, with aromatic cigar box alongside polished oak.

Palate Gentle, fragrant peat smoke supports a floral hint, with more zesty orange and tropical fruits and a pinch of tobacco.

Finish Tropical fruit and candied orange peel lingers.

disappointing
I wasn't impressed I was expecting more bold Orange and found it bland

Tastes like a cheap blend
I bought this on recommendation, but was sadly disappointed. Marmalade and oaky notes are there, but rather overpowered by the harshness of this dram. Even a drop of water to lower the ABV failed to make it a pleasuable experience. Not for me.

Delicate
Some of the reviews will have you thinking this is an “orange-bomb” but it’s far from it. It’s delicate to a point that I thought I’d had a cold! The orange is there, but it’s well married.

The nose struck me like an old fashioned you’d had laying about for a bit and the ice is nearly melted. The sugary orange with bitters are there but it’s softened. The orange hits your palate fast, you could almost miss it as it turns in to tropical fruits, very clean and refreshing, a very very faint hint of ashy smoke. The finish is again clean and round with a hint of tobacco.

Water definitely opened this up. The orange will show more with this addition. Really enjoyed this and was a great experience to add to the taste bank!

A pleasure to drink
Light and fruity with a hint of tobacco, will be surprised if this doesn't sell out soon

Like drinking Cointreau
Nose - Orange, white wine, maybe a hint of peat
Palette - More orange, white bread and again a hint of peat.
Finish - As above - orange, bit of smoke.
A splash of water seemed to bring out the flavour.
Enjoyable enough. The orange flavour is a bit much - not really for me.

Approaching a liqueur rather than a whisky
It smells and tastes like a blend, with a slight harsh acetone coming off it. Whilst the orange peel effect is suggested (strongly) on the nose, it overpowers everything on the taste and I find it too sweet. I was going to give it a 3 out of 5 but after coming back to a few more sips, I don't really enjoy it and wouldn't recommend it. This is the most unusual whisky experience I've had, I'm hesitant to call it a whisky experience as it is closer to drinking a sweet liqueur.

Reviewed based on a 3cl sample.

Unlike anything I had before
Had one of these in the October Pour and Sip Club. Very interesting whisky from an exciting distillery!
