Steel Bonnets Bottling Note

Steel Bonnets from The Lakes Distillery is an intriguing blended malt, made with whiskies from both Scotland and England! At the core is a hearty helping of The Lakes very own single malt whisky, supported by single malts from undisclosed distilleries. Enjoyably smoky, with balancing notes of dried fruit and fresh vanilla.

Tasting Note by The Producer

The whisky has creamy, slightly nutty & full bodied flavour. Notes of vanilla, ginger, nutmeg, and hints dried fruit. All held together with a sweet comforting layer of wood smoke.

Steel Bonnets Reviews

Obviously judging by the reviews, not for the snobs

This is a very easy drink, nothing sharp, or uncomfortable in it, you could say smooth and slightly smokey with a warm heart and finish.
Single malt snobs will hate it, because it's a nice blended whiskey, and fairly priced.

Different for everyone

I had some of this over Christmas 2019. It was a hit or miss kinda drink. Everyone seemed to taste something different. Myself I found it had a smooth taste of vanilla while my wife said it was to "burnt" she meant smokey. I recommend getting the tester bottle first to see what you think. I found this rather nice to drink while chilling on the sofa watching tv.

Decent dram

It’s very difficult to review whisky as one person says 5 star excellent the next review is 1 star awful. Whisky divides opinion more than say a car or motorbike etc etc. I love whisky Classic Laddie at the moment and I’m a full paid up member of the 50/50 club. I’m in the 50% That love Laphroaig
There’s nothing wrong with this whisky imo. It’s a decent tasting dram and I’ve paid more for worse. It’s very hard to review as someone agrees and someone disagrees according to tastes. Try it

A great blend really excellent mild smoke. Price is irrelevant. wanted more English in the blend . 1st edition still good. Well worth a shot! Good job lakes distillery!

Such a disapointment

Because of my family heritage on the Borders, I so wanted this to be a great dram but the negative reviews are the honest ones here. This makes the very thin Penderyn Celt taste like the elyxir of the gods. No smoke. A stylish case and high price won't make it taste good.

Excellent but too pricey

Received as a gift, one of the best I’ve had in 40+ years of drinking whisky...
Unfortunately at the price I won’t be having another bottle...
Shame, .. I was hoping for a £35 - 40 price tag

Intriguing dram

Smokey undertones, dried fruit and ginger
Slightly short for £50, but an intriguing dram. Shave £5-8 off the price and definitely worth it

Not for me

Just tried a free sample minature of this stuff. To be honest if I'd paid for it I'd be wanting my money back. If you want an average dram with a smoky undertone there are cheaper options.

Can't wait to try some of the new releases from Lakes Distillery - a cracking dram this!

A lovely dram, and the bottle is stunning. Gave it for a gift and my father in law loved it!

Impressive. After reading a few negative reviews and looking at the inflated price I wasn’t looking forward to drinking this dram. All I can say is that I’m impressed. Much better then I originally thought it was going to be. Very drinkable and well balanced. One of the best blended whiskys outside of Japan.

Okay at best

This is a light fruit/sweet and honey profile whisky, being a little rough around the edges. I can't understand the high price tag, for what it is ?

Very enjoyable

I had this in a world whisky advent calendar 2018, I would definitely buy a full bottle, it has a smokey flavour and slight sweet taste, very enjoyable!

Wonderful surprise

Not only is the packaging superb, the taste of this dram is worth its salt too!
On the sweeter side but still full of flavor.

Not Good

Tried this on a recent visit to the distillery. I was not impressed. It's a blended malt of indeterminate age at £65. I asked the distillery staff about the content of the bottle and while they knew a lot about the packaging and the history of the name, they couldn't say much about the whisky itself apart from it contains whisky from 3 Scottish distilleries and something from the Lakes Distillery. The sample I had made me wish I hadn't tried it - so not something I would spend £65 on, even with the impressive tin.

Extremely pleasant

An extremely pleasant whisky. Very tasteful. A slight hint of honey. Would thoroughly recommend it and am looking forward to my next glass.

A surprisingly good blend which leaves you wanting more

I used to drink single malts exclusively years back but was introduced to some good blends and lost the snobbbery. Having tried the lakes distillery offering I have to say I am impressed. Good balance between the smooth/creamy side with woodsmoke on the pallette which speaks well of the English/Scottish mix. Looking forward to the single malts they are releasing now. Try it today. You won’t be disappointed. Off to finish my glass with a good cigar!

Wonderful flavours, balance and a superb story that sets the scene. A real talking point with my friends and family. Celebrating history and innovation. Thrilled to taste the first hint of The Lakes Single Malt in this Whisky too. Well done Lakes Distillery
