The Glenlivet
Scotland
Single Malt
A cask strength 1991 vintage Glenlivet, this is a single barley edition of Nadurra, in this case the Triumph variety. Very tasty indeed.
The label says distilled 1991 and bottled 03/10 (batch no 0310B) so 18 and a half or 19 years old. There was no sign of leakage but the cork disintegrated when I tried to remove it so I had to decant it and strain the liquor before rebottling. The aroma of toffee and floral honey with stay with me for a while. Before tasting in a Glencairn glass I had a taste of the Glenlivet 12 to remind myself of the house style. This is fabulously rich, complex and smooth (the aeration it received in serving may have helped open this up a little) you can instantly tell it's unchillfiltered by the chewy feel. Suck some air through it and there is a pleasant sourness behind the strong chocolate/toffee flavour as the complex floral notes really explode. The finish is very dry and peppery but the maltiness lingers at the front of the mouth. Going back to The Glenlivet 12, the youngster feels very lightweight and a little too sweet. This is definitely worth the premium price.
