Fiona Macleod 33yo Bottling Note

Another incredible Islay single malt from The Character of Islay Whisky Company, which has been matured for an impressive 33 years! Over three decades of rest for this expression (which was distilled during a time of great uncertainty in the whisky industry) has resulted in a flavour profile packed with mature oak, rich smoke and flashes of lively tropical fruit.

The name Fiona Macleod is a reference to the pen name used by 19th century Scottish writer and poet William Sharp. Rather fitting that it's being used for a whisky from an undisclosed Islay distillery, don't you think?

Tasting Note by The Producer

Nose: Ripe tropical fruits with hints of barbecued banana, giving way to smoky vanilla and a pervasive peatiness.

Palate: Opens with salty iodine, damp wood smoke and develops into sweet mango and candied ginger. Develops with a briny character, citrus and dried fruits.

Finish: Sweet, barley sugar, dried pineapple and bonfires extinguished by ale.

Magnificent
Dark, rich with peat and yet somehow understated. Perfectly balanced panoply of flavors. A truly special dram.

Gift to myself...
lovely botle. Great packaging by this company. Very quick delivery. Not bought to drink so unable to give review of whisky itself but very pleased with purchase.

60th Birthday to remember
What a Birthday treat this turned out to be.
Peaches & vanilla came through, over the citrus notes.
This is a definite re-order coming up soon as this one has gone.

A rare treat!
Actually more citrus/exotic fruits before coastal notes, peat and smoke enter. The nose predicted rather the opposite. Sweeter fruits (particularly peaches/apricots) as well accompanied by vanilla, malts, spice, little charry oak, floral honey, …

Given the more than respectable age on this the ABV is still actively boosting each of the layers to a fully flavor packed end.
