Teeling Blackpitts is the first peated single malt from the team in Dublin, named after the Blackpitts area just behind the distillery, which just happened to be rather well-known for its malting houses. Interestingly, this expression is triple distilled, which the Teeling folks say helps allow the barbeque smoke elements from the whiskey's flavour profile stand out. It was aged in a combination of bourbon and Sauternes casks, helping to bring some sweetness to this peaty treat.
Toasty clove and cask char, with butterscotch, pineapple cubes and honey.
Bonfire embers, chocolate éclairs and green pears. A hint of meaty malt, too.
Lasting plum, apple and peppery oak.
Got this as a sample. Don’t like the Irish stuff, all of it far too forward and finishes too quickly. I’ll rate this based on the knowledge that’s just Irish. So this has a wonderful peaty flavour and a nice slight sweetness to it and if I liked the flavour delivery of Irish then this would be up there as a cupboard essential.
Very surprised with the unfair review! Perfect balance of fruit & peat. & more. Finish is long and spicy.
I love my peated whisky’s but I’m afraid it’s quite one dimensional and the dimension is that of burnt clutch. Far too harsh and tarry. No warming smokiness. Like chewing on an old boot sole. Sorry, Teeling!
On the nose, sweet vanilla, cloves, fresh mint, Milky way bar, hint of smoke (peat) as it comes from Highlands Scotland. On the palate, initialy sweet, much more peat but pleasant, not medicinal. Adding water makes more citrus fruit, dark chocolate and smoke intensifies. There is some bitternes, probably from used bourbon barrels, and because it's NAS I think it lacks maturity. Finish, medium, cloves, peat, sweet.
After the initial peatiness I get a hint of vanilla followed by a smokey Barbecue aroma and there is a touch of cloves, if you breathe through your nose! But, there is no harshness here. This is a lovely, smooth Peated Single Malt Irish Whiskey from Teeling.
