Gordon & MacPhail
Scotland
Single Malt
A 2009 vintage Teaninich, matured until 2017 before being bottled by Gordon & MacPhail for the Connoisseurs Choice range. You don't get to see much Teaninich single malt these days, so it's always a treat when these bottlings come in.
Chocolate brownie with bits of cherries in the batter, well-charred oak and a touch of walnut.
Continued nuttiness on the palate, now paired with caramelised banana and zesty lime.
Rounded notes of brown sugar and toasted barley.
It's a common complaint these days among malt whisky drinkers that there are far too many poorish quality NAS releases costing too much. It is, therefore, refreshing to find that some producers, in this case Gordon & Macphail, are quite happy to label this as an 8 year old and, given that it's 46%, non-chillfiltred and is natural colour, sell it at a reasonable price. It is also a very tasty dram. There's vanilla, banana and citrus and a long finish with some sherry and malt sweetness. This is young and lively but satisfying. It makes me wonder how immature some of the NAS whiskies are if the producers aren't willing to make an age statement.
