Tamdhu 12 Year Old

A fabulous Tamdhu, matured exclusively in a combination of first-fill and refill Oloroso sherry casks for 12 years. Sherried Speyside whisky is always a winner, with oodles of fruit and spice. Check out that handsome retro bottle, too. Stunning stuff.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Orange Starburst, cinnamon swirls and toasted oak, along with some mint chocolate.

Palate Lots of plum, juicy raisin, fried banana, raspberry jam doughnuts and oak spice.

Finish Chocolate fudge and just a whisper of smoke, with sweet cinnamon returning.

Reviews for Tamdhu 12 Year Old
A real pick me up
One of the best Speyside whiskys full of body and flavour one to savour on a winter evening.

6/10 (or 3/5). nice, nothing special. Not as complex as my rum collection. Wouldn't go out my way for this
I'm more well-versed with rums, and new to whiskey, so I took to tasting this alongside a dram of Glenkinchie and Glen Scotia... All 12 year (as 12 year Doorly's is my all-time favourite rum, and felt like a good starting point, as anything older, for me, gives too much of a burn.)

On the nose, to a whiskey layman, it just smelt of whiskey... Couldn't really detect anything. Upon tasting, for me, it was savoury to begin with, followed by a kick of ginger, notes of zesty orange peel, and then the sweetness came through which I felt was quite a simple sweetness - think white sugar rather than honey, demerara or molasses...
Holding it in my mouth, winey and smokey notes came through, and upon watering down to open it up a bit, a strong raspberry and floral hit, and for some reason, I could taste... Chapstick... I've not used any, so it's not coming from me!

After watering down, this was the most fresh and floral of the 3 I'd tasted this evening

5 star for the money
Really nice dram and very drinkable for the price.

Get the 15 Year Old
A bit too bland and young. It's not a bad whisky at all, but the 15 year old is far better in my opinion.

Fair price but nothing special.
Perhaps I expected too much given the reviews here but I felt this was nothing special. It lacked the richness and dried fruit notes I look for in sherried Malts. Whether that's due to the use of sherry treated casks I could not say. I suspect the 15 is far better and utilises better casks.

SUPERB 12 YR OLD SPEYSIDE
Happy Fathers Day 2021:
High respect for the 15 yr old (46%) brother.
They're both beautifully presented - unique bottle shape & guaranteed quality! ...... Great gift?

Natural Auburn / Bronze colour, sherry on opening - generous film on the Glencairn.
Fresh on the whiff, nothing overwhelming or outstanding! Some vanilla & wood (oak?)
Magnificent taste - full on, all those spiced fruits, malty & creamy, smooth & balanced. No big 💥 @ 43%. Thats OK!
The box suggests "merest wisp of peat smoke". Not for me!
Its a delicious, fruity speyside dram - a winner. That said, no disappointment here, but the older brother was 🤏 2 points better for me. Great value & yes, absolutely recommend. (both)

N: Vanilla Ice Cream, very fresh wood, shavings, sherry.

P: Creamy rich & warming - very much with those dried Christmas cake fruits, gentle wood, spice, nuttiness, even a hint of chocolate!

F: Gentle & quite superb, again a sherried wood well into a medium dry oak finish. ✔

Delicate and refined.
Nose: Fluffy whipped meringue, hints of vanilla pod. cinnamon. Clean sherry oak.

Palate: More of the same. A fluffy, vanilla meringue. Clean sherry. Cinnamon. Honey. A pinch of white pepper.

Medium finish.

The distillate really shines here. Certainly sherry forward but definitely not a 'sherry bomb'. Delicate and refined. An excellent dram. I would likely give it the full 5 stars if it were bottled at 46% abv.

A bit pricey in my area, though. It intrigues me enough to want to try the cask strength offering.
