Strathisla 65 Year Old 1953 - Private Collection (Gordon & MacPhail)
Extremely well-aged whisky is the name of the game for Gordon & MacPhail's Private Collection, and that's exactly what we have here. It's a 65 year old single malt from the Strathisla Distillery, which was distilled all the way back in 1965! It spent many, many, many moons in a first-fill sherry butt, before being bottled in 2019 at 43.5% ABV. Just 143 bottles were produced, each one housed within a handsome wooden presentation box.
Tasting Note by The Producer
Nose
Initially, cascading aromas of dried fruit and rich sherry. Hints of wood polish and candied fruit combine with an intense note of orange oil. Baking spices – clove, nutmeg, allspice – combine before revealing a subtle menthol edge.
Palate
Initial mature oak notes open into flavours of autumnal berries: blackberry, blackcurrant, redcurrant, and cranberry. Crystallised ginger develops while traces of dark chocolate add complexity. Aniseed notes remain.
Finish
A delightfully balanced fruit and oak finish; nutty notes underscore a subtle but lingering humidor edge.
