Springbank
Scotland
Single Malt
A bottle of the well-established mauve-packaged 18 Year Old Springbank. The multi-award-winning Campbeltown single malt has been matured in ex-bourbon casks, so expect a big, coastal, oily flavour from this one.
Toasted bananas, honey and bakewell tarts with coastal hints. Quite oily.
Big, spicy and gutsy, with notes of chilli, pine, citrus, aniseed and rich fruits.
Long, salty, chocolate caramels with hints of smoky fruit.

This is the 2018 edition and it differs a bit from earlier batches since it’s 100% bourbon casks. The nose reminds me a little of the Kilkerran 12 but with a little less smoke. Some gooseberry and vanilla with the classic coastal springbank touch behind. The taste is full and oily with some wood elements and vanilla again with something metallic and sweetness and then it gets very dry with salt and coconut in the finish. Really nice but I like earlier batches more and the reason for that is that Springbank (and Longrow to for that matter) is my favorite whisky to drink in the fall but this lacks a bit the dark elements of damp leaves, leather and dark fruits that I find in the earlier batches. This is more of a springwhisky for me, no pun intended. Still very nice, I love the big and oily moutfeel with the salt in the finish.
My review is for a 2017 bottling of this Springbank 18 yr old. I tried this scotch back in 2013 or so and had to throw it sink so I must have had a bad bottling. I decided to give it another go and was glad to have purchased this one again. But, while it is a fine malt, I find it highly overpriced in the USA as many other 18 year olds are just as good for a lot less money. Actually, I thought the Hazelburn 13 yr Oloroso Cask was much richer with more flavor than the 18 yr old. I liked the light peat of the 18 yr old and usually don't go so much for peat. I doubt I will buy another Springbank 18 yr old.
Demanding whisky-definitely not for beginners.Real treasure for experienced whisky drinkers.
Get a bottle if you can find one. I've tried many 18 yr bottles, but this one of the best i've had ever had.
Fantastic dram. Sweet fruit, but not overpowering sweetness. The piney flavor and the long lingering finish really set this one apart. I love Balvenie Doublewood 17 as well, but this is every bit as good while being a little more complex. Excellent. Cheers Springbank!
