Samuel Gulliver & Co
Single Malt
A gently peated English single malt, Gulliver's 47 is distilled in Norfolk by The English Whisky Company using Concerto barley grown in East Anglia. The whisky has been aged in bourbon casks from Jim Beam, which haven't been broken down and rebuilt. The brand is inspired by Samuel Gulliver (a real person, rather than the fictional explorer), who explored the world in pursuit of wines, spirits and liqueurs, and brought them back to 18th century Britain. Gulliver's 47 was then launched eight generations later by his descendant Stuart Gulliver, carrying on the legacy. It's also bottled at 47% ABV, which is rather handy.
Cinnamon loaf, toasty oak, vanilla sponge and candied citrus with creamy malt and a whisper of peat smoke.
Apples and pears, slightly burnt toast and butter, more creamy vanilla and floral malt.
A gently spiced finish with lingering notes of bonfire smoke.
Personally I was delighted to taste these whiskies with Stuart and Fergus at St. John, then again it's all in the glass and in my surname, we have not been let down.... Trevor Gulliver C0-Proprietor St. John Smithfield London
I first tried Gulliver's 47 at Glastonbury Festival the other day and never have I fallen in love with a drink so fast. This single malt whisky had a wonderfully smooth crescendo of taste that culminated in a lovely smokiness that lingered on the tongue and had me craving for more. I love the brand's history and heritage. One sip really made me feel like I was taking a step back into 1747. It is great to see such a traditional English brand take on a market dominated by Scottish whiskeys (who should definitely keep a keen eye on this new, serious player). In conclusion, I cannot recommend Gulliver's 47 enough to both amateur and expert in the world of whisky and I can't wait to see what Samuel Gulliver and Co do next.
