Introduced in 2016, Lustau doubles down on the sherry influence all Redbreast fans love. This single pot still Irish whiskey was initially matured in a combination of American and European oak casks (like all Redbreasts) for 9 to 12 years, before being transferred over to first fill Oloroso sherry casks from Bodegas Lustau for a further year. Sublime stuff.
Rich and round with toasted almond, Curaçao orange peel studded with clove, stewed fruits and juicy sultanas.
Chewy milk chocolate and honey (almost a bit Crunchie-like) with allspice, walnut and poached plum depths.
Long with apple turnovers giving way to rich sherry and crushed cinnamon.
Nose: Fruit treated wood, a lick of varnish. Palate: Lots of heavily sherried wooded spice. Sparkles on and on. Dark orange spikes. After: Oaky but short.
This has a rich, sherried flavour, more interesting than the Redbreast 12. It benefits from sitting in the glass for a few minutes, otherwise it tastes too young. Nice and creamy! Very enjoyable.
A little stronger and a little younger and more brash perhaps, but still a fine version of the 12 yr old. Sophisticated opening leads to a drier, less sweet finish, with a bit more fire in the belly... my 'lady of the night'
It wears it's Irish whiskeyness on it's sleeve, in a blind test you would have no doubt of the country of origin, and is the type of bottle uncle Patrick gets out at christmas, but why wait till then!! enjoy it's refined taste now !!
Great whiskey. At first I tasted it by adding a little water. Tasted good but nothing special. Then the second time I enjoyed it neat. As like as chalk and cheese! 46% ABV and it's smooth, sweet and full of great flavors. This Robin is really high on my list.
