Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Some dusty spice, a touch of Norwegian hand cream and cocoa at first with sweet liquorice, Curaçao, vanilla custard and crème caramel developing.

Palate: Fruity, then wonderfully spicy rye. Sweet liquorice again (specifically the coconutty/nougat-y pink Liquorice Allsorts that have a black bit in the middle), plenty of oak and then clove drops on the tail.

Finish: Vanilla with cinnamon and apricot Danish.

Pikesville 6 Year Old 110 Proof Straight Rye Reviews

Great high proof rye

Fantastic dram. Must have for home bar if you like rye whiskey. The nose is to die for, best rye nose ever. Palate is strong... baking slices, rye bread, caramel, vanilla, slight orange peel. Drinks so smooth for 110 proof.

Fantastic American rye whiskey

For the money (at least at US prices of around $50) this is simply fantastic. Aged 6 years might seem suspiciously young for those used to Scotch ages, but for an American straight rye aged in the hotter Kentucky climate in new charred barrels it's pitch perfect. What sets it apart from the competition is how balanced it is, there is a lot going on flavor-wise but nothing is overdone and it drinks well below its 55% ABV. The rare rye that I recommend drinking neat, or with a bit of water. But don't drown it just because it says 110 proof on the bottle, it really doesn't need it. If I want to convince an American whiskey skeptic that they can do better than Jack Daniels Old No. 7, this is what I reach for now.

Favorite American Whiskey

As an American whisky lover who doesn’t really love American whisky this is my favorite American whisky. The mashbill only contains 51% rye. In other words the bare minimum to be called rye according to U.S. law. That’s why a lot of people don’t detect a strong rye presence. It’s also the reason why this tastes so similar to bourbon, since it’s almost 40% corn. For the record all Heaven Hill products are usually excellent and they are generally the only bourbons and ryes that I buy.

Best rye ever!

At first nose, I would not be able to detect this as rye. A very peculiar rye.

Good but there is better out there.

Yeah it’s good gut not as good in my opinion as 1776. I don’t know if it’s just my pallet but the rye seems to be a little muted.

Best rye

Probably my favourite whiskey
Nose: for me, Rye spice, caramel, and like flat doctor pepper and coke

Palate: A nice burn, classic bourbon flavours, little grassy, candy liquorice I agree with, that doctor pepper taste again is strong for me, then a long rye finish, very flavourful stuff it’s amazing
Very balanced great taste, nice burn, nice finish what more could you want

Delicious

Fantastic rye, just heavenly. But, Norwegian hand creme on the nose? Lol, can you get any more pretentious?

Excellent rye whiskey

Pikesville straight Rye is rye whiskey, and will fall flat in the bottle a little bit if it’s on the shelf for too long, or maybe exposed to too much heat during storage. So you might want to keep it on your shelf for about a year is perfect. If you pick up a bottle of it, and it’s an older bottle some of the rye notes will disappear, or flatten out a bit. Basically with rye whiskey newer is better. Basically with rye whiskey newer is better. ^^

Best of what's out there

Heaven Hill Distillery...in name and meaning. Without intending to be gushing, this mob are head and shoulders above their contemporaries in the Bourbon game. Here is another example of (in this category) Rye, better than the rest. Strong, flavorful and satisfying...what more do you want? "Good value"- There is that too.

Outstanding distilled spirit.

This has been my first purchase of Pikesville rye whiskey, and will not be my last. I had been a Jack Daniels drinker since my 20's, then to Glenfiddich Scotch. This is comparable to either.
