"one of the aromas of the year... after that nose, the delivery just had to be majestic. And it is... those wonderful, bustling, fizzing spices... the best from Heaven Hill for some time"

- Jim Murray (97.5 Points)

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Some dusty spice, a touch of Norwegian hand cream and cocoa at first with sweet liquorice, Curaçao, vanilla custard and crème caramel developing.

Palate: Fruity, then wonderfully spicy rye. Sweet liquorice again (specifically the coconutty/nougat-y pink Liquorice Allsorts that have a black bit in the middle), plenty of oak and then clove drops on the tail.

Finish: Vanilla with cinnamon and apricot Danish.

Pikesville 6 Year Old 110 Proof Straight Rye Reviews

Best rye

Probably my favourite whiskey
Nose: for me, Rye spice, caramel, and like flat doctor pepper and coke

Palate: A nice burn, classic bourbon flavours, little grassy, candy liquorice I agree with, that doctor pepper taste again is strong for me, then a long rye finish, very flavourful stuff it’s amazing
Very balanced great taste, nice burn, nice finish what more could you want

Fantastic rye, just heavenly. But, Norwegian hand creme on the nose? Lol, can you get any more pretentious?

Excellent rye whiskey

Pikesville straight Rye is rye whiskey, and will fall flat in the bottle a little bit if it’s on the shelf for too long, or maybe exposed to too much heat during storage. So you might want to keep it on your shelf for about a year is perfect. If you pick up a bottle of it, and it’s an older bottle some of the rye notes will disappear, or flatten out a bit. Basically with rye whiskey newer is better. Basically with rye whiskey newer is better. ^^

Best of what's out there

Heaven Hill name and meaning. Without intending to be gushing, this mob are head and shoulders above their contemporaries in the Bourbon game. Here is another example of (in this category) Rye, better than the rest. Strong, flavorful and satisfying...what more do you want? "Good value"- There is that too.

Outstanding distilled spirit.

This has been my first purchase of Pikesville rye whiskey, and will not be my last. I had been a Jack Daniels drinker since my 20's, then to Glenfiddich Scotch. This is comparable to either.

One of the best American whiskeys

Excellent rye however I’m not a pompous idiotic prat who smells Norwegian hand cream so what do I know?

worth every penny

found it in maryland for $44. yup the 110. not overwhelmingly spicy from the nose you can tell it'll be smooth. Had been looking for it for a while, but it's been two months since I devoured a bottle of whiskey so I said what the hell. It's not lost on me. Much better than the routine wt101, in fact I was ready to walk out of the store but then spotted this on the shelf.

Rich in the nose and long finish

To understand this whiskey I had to make a simultaneous taste. Compared with 1776, Knob Creek, Rittenhouse and Rebel Yell. Rye whiskey is hard not to be good, but from the comparison Pikesville comes out clearly winner both on the scent and on the flavor. Add a teaspoon of water to enhance the scent, but also direct is phenomenal.

Best rye whiskey out there period!

Even at 110 proof it is smooth, full of flavor, and easy to to sip and enjoy. Don’t take my word though. Try for yourself. I enjoy snacking on pork rinds with this. You’ll understand if you try it.

Top rye, high price but also high quality

It is great rye whiskey but there is an issue with it for me at least. I love rye whiskey, but I am convinced it should be drunk dry, without ice or water. And at 110 proofl, I find that the ending is too strong and that it goes to erase a part of its wonderful flavor. It is only my modest opinion. However, a whiskey of the highest quality.

When we want to introduce friends to rye

I’d read that their 80-proof (for which they recently ended production) was apparently the most popular brand of rye in nearby Baltimore. Seeking out a bottle (and with no more to be found), I had to content myself with trying the 110 proof: intense...richly flavored.
Too strong for me to sip straight—but it makes the best, most full-bodied, Manhattan I know.

Norwegian hand cream, whaaaa? Hilarious!

Norwegian hand cream! Really?! Ha! ha!ha!

I'm enjoying some right now! Norwegian hand cream... Your killin' me!

Thanks for the laugh😜

One of the best Rye's I've had of late

Great rye, much prefer it to anything else in the price range.

25th July 2017

Clean and smooth, doesn't burn like you would think 55% alcohol would.

A high proof rye whiskey with (for me) 0 burn. Pikesville for me joins along with whistle Pig as a rye you can drink, without feeling like you just ran sandpaper down your throat. It was $50 at my local state store (Alabama, ABC store) most definitely worth the money.

A canny wee drop remoaners claim about!

Some fool has mentioned this is priced so because of Brexit. But at least as an English person due to Brexit, I now have a job to try and buy it which although due to the remoaner complaining about the price due to the crash in the pound. I was lucky enough to have a job and go abroad to buy this! This is the sort who loves curry but will put their house up for sale as a non white moves in on the lane!

Excellent, Not enough Rye

needs more rye in the mash bill for my taste, could be exceptional

Pikesville 6 yr: Will Convert Non-Rye Drinkers to Enthusiasts!

After my 1st dram, I had to look twice at the ABV%. I know the estimated mash bill lists its rye content at no more than 60%, lower than most straight Rye Whiskeys. Nonetheless, at 110pf, and after its most pleasant aroma, you still find yourself preparing for a fair amount of forward/mid biting spice with a long burn finish. However, Pikesville 6yr, considered a Maryland style Rye (lower rye bill than Pennsylvania style), offers an equally subtle forward spice and mildly dry, comforting warm finish. Heaven Hill, has produced the most delicious, smoothest, complex flavored yet unassuming, and perfectly balanced Rye I have the pleasure to drink.

A Funny Turn Of Events !!!

Fantastic stuff this is !. I was just a single malt whisky man and old dark rum man and I sent for some samples of another American whiskey and got this stuff as an accident. Luckily enough Master Of Malt let me keep them as a good will gesture and I was totally gob smacked at the depth of flavour of this whiskey. It was probably a slick move on Master Of Malts (JOKING) behalf because I fell in love with this stuff instantly and ended up buying a couple of bottles. A funny turn of events that ACCIDENTALLY got me into this stuff !!! Mad World !!! 5 Stars Easily.

@Very Surprised How Good Rye Is

I recommend you try Bulleit Rye and Knob Creek Rye next. Master Of Malt sells them, and they are cheaper than Pikesville, but still very good and different from each other and Pikesville. Knob Creek Rye is so spicy it can blow your head off if you aren't prepared for it.

Very surprised how good Rye is !

I'm not a big bourbon fan and yes I know this isn't bourbon but it's one 3 ingredients that is in bourbon but WOW Rye whisky or whiskey more apt 😉 ,On its own is not bad at all in fact it's very nice and I'm blowed away with its complexity and aroma. Since I'm a newbie to Rye whiskey can anyone recommend some good drams of Rye whiskey because I've no idea which are the better ones to try ? I'm going to have to do some experimenting with this but in the mean time pulse recommend some good Rye drams. 🤤 - as homer would do

I'm over whiskey with bite. That said, at least it's tasty.

6 years old, packs some beautiful flavours ... A really really good whisky!

Decent Rye

Very good - needs to be let out with a decent slug of water... with Brexit idiots trashing the £ it looks pricey, but worth it if you can afford the cash

3rd November 2016

Jim got this one bang on....'s absolutely wonderful.

20th October 2016

Jim Murray gets a lot of stick but I can see why his score was so high with this!! Unbelievable whiskey!

20th October 2016

I found this at a Mom& Pop liquor store in Lynnwood, Washington for $52 out the door ( in Washington with what amounts to 30% in taxes on alcohol) this was a hell of a bargain. I bought all they had!

22nd September 2016

The only ryes that can touch it are, the TOTAL Whistle Pig & a couple of High West ryes

22nd September 2016

This isn't bad at all!!
In fact I'm knocked out by how good this is!!

Keeping it real

"Norwegian hand cream"? Really? I'll have to take your word for that. All I know is this is a really really good rye whiskey. It's got a very 'now' flavour profile...salted caramel, burnt butter, very aromatic. Has the longest chewy finish I've ever come across. Remember those Texan chew bars you used to get? It reminds me of those. Overall I reckon it's solidly great without being must-have mind blowing. But it's worth the money and well-deservedly up there so grab it if you see it available; it's definitely one to try, you won't be disappointed.

13th May 2016

Awesome stuff

My favourite whisky bar none. Big, bold, buttery, spicy. Yummy.

3rd May 2016

A Truly Outstanding Rye

The first person to review this has given nosing and tasting notes that I largely agree with (though I disagree that there is any amount of bitterness on the finish) so I won't repeat them. If you find this whiskey available, buy it without hesitation, is my advice.

24th April 2016

Not to be missed.

Absolutely delicious. Drinking chocolate with a little spiced apple on the nose, vanilla, plenty more, just can't work it out yet! A real silky mouth coating texture, initially very cool on the tongue, then spices kick in, balanced with no overbearing heat, just right. A long finish which is slightly bitter but still retains that hint of sweetness, agree with the cherry comments I've read. Even nicer on the 2nd, 3rd....mouthful. Will keep a beady eye for a re-stock on this one.
