Not even single grain whisky can escape the reach of Darkness! This North British spent 3 months in first-fill, 50 litre Oloroso Sherry casks before it was bottled. These casks were specially coopered and allow for much more interaction between the whisky and wood, resulting in more complexity and a rich depth of Sherry notes. Nothing escapes the Darkness!
Nose: A hint of raspberry bush, tobacco leaf and vanilla. Flamed lemon peel, custard pastries, bay leaf and nutmeg.
Palate: Brown sugar, blueberry a touch of evaporated milk, sweet spice and rich caramel.
Finish: Crème brûlée with a liberal dusting of nutmeg.
Overall: There's something Christmassy about this combination of spices and egg custard style notes, but if you're more comfortable with vanilla caramel than eggnog then you're still in the right place.

It has been a difficult year and I have been forced to try many many samples from MoM. This gets into my top four - alongside Dalmore 18, Bushmills 21, Loch Lomond 12 Year Old - Single Grain Organic (Dà Mhìle)This was "interesting". Normally I wouldn't go for such a high abv but here I made an exception. The first nose was powerful without being acrid. Then give it 30 minutes to breath and WOW! The taste was full of flavour but just overpowered by the 50.4%, However when a tiny drop of water was added it was excellent. Full of flavour - possible caramel and brown sugar but just a hint of sweetness? Sherry overtones. A really deep and long lasting flavour.
