    Dalry Milk 16 Year Old

Let us dance down the factory steps and present to you, Dalry Milk! A 16-year-old single grain Scotch from the North British distillery that almost feels like it was created specifically to make the perfect whisky alternative to an Easter egg.*

There’s a cask and a half right here. What we mean by that is, it's a 2:1 ratio of oloroso and palo cortado cask matured single-grain, finished off with a chunky square of nostalgia and a scent that takes you back, like a reminder of an old chocolate bar wrapper from days gone by. The branding was obviously far superior back then because it's how you remember it growing up. The bars were definitely bigger and cheaper. Really, everything was just better, wasn’t it?

What's with the name Dalry Milk?

For decades, no one walked the streets of the Gorgie & Dalry area west of Edinburgh, instead, they floated upon the scents of malt and yeast wafting from the North British distillery (or the old Caledonian Brewery). North British is sort of industrial and imposing from the outside, just like Willy Wonka’s factory, but within, magic happens. Real, no-foolin’ whisky magic (no oompa loompas at NB though. They work at the council in this story**).

One fateful day in 2009, presumably when it had cleared its to-do list entirely of social and economic issues that needed dealing with, the local council mandated that the distillery had to install an odour control tower to mitigate those mouthwatering smells, much to the upset of everyone in the whole of Edinburgh (everyone right? OK well for sure everyone we know). It sounds like it could be pulled straight from an unpublished chapter of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the life lesson; that councils love to stick their big noses in.

*That is exactly why we did it. Go on, be an Easter bunny, Master of Malt style. Also 'cause when our award-winning head of whisky Sam Simmons talks about that old North British smell, he cries tears of actual single grain Scotch every time.

**Gosh, Hope all this talk of Willy Wonka and town councils doesn’t land us in hot chocolate.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Creamy notes of condensed milk, buttery flapjack, and Rich Tea biscuits, with hints of milky Coco Pops and burnt brown sugar.

    Palate

Sweet layers of burnt sugar and vanilla cream, fudge, milk chocolate, tinned peaches and pears.

    Finish

So creamy, so chocolatey, with nutty cereal, rice pudding, gently warming ginger, and toffee pennies.

    Genius selling ploy

Bought it on a whim thinking oh boy must be good as I like a chocolate gin. This is lovely. Just arrived today, had to open it as soon as it came. Smells great, looks good tastes lovely. Should have bought 2. Really only bought as we wanted a bottle of campbeltown loch while it was on offer and looked for something quirky to get free delivery. You won't be disappointed.

    It's not just a gag

The price point doesn't match the quality on this one - this is one smooth dram, perfectly balanced sweetness, and many layers of flavour. The only thing that would take this up to a 5 star for me is if it had a slightly more sophisticated finish, but as-is I would still strongly recommend picking up a bottle.

    Cannot get over this label

It’s genius. If the whisky is even 10% as good as the label this is going to be a hit.
