Nikka Coffey Malt Bottling Note

While most distilleries use their Coffey stills only to make grain whisky, Nikka use the two Coffey stills at their Miyagikyo distillery to create malt whisky too. The Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky was introduced to their selection of expressions in 2014. Plenty rich and flavoursome, it's a wonderful addition to Nikka's fantastic range.

Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky Reviews

New dimension

I found this whisky to be a complete new dimension of malted barley distillate. Neither japanese or scotch, just a thing on its own. Extreamly malty, deep and mellow, sweet, though elegant and layered.
May be a somewhat similar to Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban, but more elaborated and elegant.

My happy place...

Fantastic. There is a mild burn that may discourage a few but it's easily tempered with a drop of water and then it's just a joy: biscuit-y, vanilla-laced, good length and lovely finish. Skip dessert and have a double of this. If there is such as a thing as comfort food for whisky, I've found it.

Hello sailor!

Nose: Spiced phenolic ringlet. Banana. A putrid random note.

Palate: Luxurious flow of sweet fruits. It thick and you won't want to swallow this whiskey....just swivel all day.

After: This is resting between courses in the finest restaurant...marvellous.

Love it, wish it was more freely available

Not my whisky, can't finish the bottle.

After tasting many scotch whiskies, I ventured out and tried two Japanese whisky, the Nikka Coffey Malt and the Suntory Hibiki Japanese Harmony. I was surprised at how bad the Nikka Coffey Malt (yes it's the malt and not the grain bottle) tasted. Raw alcohol taste and it was very much like Vodka or the Korean Soju. Doesn't taste like whisky to me, maybe just a hint. Lots of burning in the mouth with very little long-lasting taste. I do not like it and cannot finish my bottle. I don't understand how this won any awards or recommended. Paid $79 here in the US.

My personal favorite , but not a whisky for everyone

Warning , if you don't like very sweet whisky's , this one will not be for you

I personally adore the lovely taste of caramel and a bit of citrus in this whisky. Lovely, smooth and gentle on the tongue.

Distinctive, delicious

I'm not sure what's going on with these reviews, I'd almost think people are mistakenly reviewing the Coffey grain rather than Coffey Malt. For me this is a really distinctive and completely delicious whisky. Nose of cereal and digestive biscuits with a really milky chocolate which incredibly carries over to the palette. Little burn, very smooth and one I intend to buy having sampled very recently

Big big burn but oh so delicious!

Lovely creaminess and flavour profiles that cannot be replicated! I’ve tried sourcing for something similar but they hardly come close! Very refined and smooth. I leave mine to sit for around 10-15mins, helps to eliminate some of the burn and taste better!

Would give 5 stars if not for the burn!

Coffey, coffee, toffee, smells delicious!

Despite the Coffey coffee joke, I must say the toffee smell is strong in this one. A little water helps the burn but use it sparingly. A travesty to compare it to something Kahlua, but the smell is very close.

Sweet sweet clementine

A lot of fake reviews on here. There is no coffee flavor at all people. It is distilled in a Coffey still. Stop review things you haven’t tried.

Creamy, sweet, citrus, pear, with a soft Japanese oak spice on the end followed by lingering honey note and sweatness

One of my firsts whiskeys. I have always claimed that it’s the one that really got me into whisky. It’s oily and fruity. Rich and nutty. It will always have a place in my heart

5th October 2019

Very pleasant

At the end of my bottle and I believe this whisky reached the peak of its sweetness. Very delicate and smooth with an interesting complexity. Definitely recommend it if you’re a beginner like myself and are looking for something outside the scotch world.

5th October 2019

Not pleasant

This is a very strange, medicinal, sweet, nasty whisky. I love Japanese whisky generally but this is an outlier. Unpleasant and cheap tasting.

30th September 2019

I like this one

My second dabble in Japanese whiskey after a bottle of Hakushu from Suntory. I think I preferred the Hakushu but this was a fairly close second.

7th September 2019

This one has everything and always makes me smile. Very smooth and rich but a pleasant citrus hit to keep it fresh. Always open along with the Taketsuru

17th March 2019

Put me off Japanese whisky for now

Like a mix of cheap whisky, 'expensive' vodka and a small splash of pear-flavoured alco-pop. Little to smell except alcohol and quite a bad aftertaste. I'd drink it again but I wouldn't pay for it.
I'm not averse to Japanese whisky but was last really into them about 9 years ago, when Hibiki 21 went for £65 and Yamazaki 18 for £50. At the time those were different and interesting whiskys, especially the Hibiki 21. Not necessarily better than a Scottish whisky but high quality with lots in there to enjoy. This coffey malt is just weird and simplistic.
For something that's different and also excellent I have recently tried and would recommend Amrut cask strength peated; that is something. Maybe that will be £500 a bottle in 10 years too.

Nice experience!

I notice pear, lime and vanilla on the nose, very refreshing.
The palate is spicy at first, then it turns to full of flavors, fruity and woody.
You can still feel a little bit spicy and salty on the tongue for a rounded finish.

Bourbon Nose, Fruity & Zesty Palate

I must say I was intrigued by this dram of how it transitions and shows you different notes throughout the tasting.

The nose has a full toffee and vanilla tone just like a Bourbon would have, even though this is malt and not maize.
So I expected a similar experience.

Now to my surprise the palate gives you something completely different! A sensation of fresh fruits, almost on the Orange side with citrus peals that gives a tart feel on the tongue. Very fesh and light.

On the finish you still have a light feel with a moment of fruitiness which then transitions towards dark chocolate, hazelnuts and some oak.

A bottle worthy of the shelf!

Just PERFECT... Almost

Oh dear God... This is an amazing whisky, it is simple as that. The nose is fruity and elegant, punchy. Than you've got this perfectly sweet and fruity attack, with some apple and lemon mixed together in a kind of oily and buttery sirup. Finish is dry with some lime and ginger, no bitterness, warm. Just a bit too short. But still, I love it and look forwardé sharing it with friends!

10th December 2018

Wonder what this would be like in 12 years?

Got some orange and meyer lemon notes from this one. Alcohol burn dissipates quickly and you're left with a long lingering sugar coating on your tongue. Liked it as i drank it, but finding the lingering sweetness to be a bit much.

Nikka’s best work

Great whisky flavorful and tasty. Loved the Nikki Grain but this takes it to a higher level!

19th October 2018

This is a fantastic Whisky! Its amazing how many of the reviewers show their total ignorance when reviewing this whisky, ie: 'Coffee taste becomes more prominent when sipping...'. It is not a coffee flavored whisky, it doesn't taste like and isn't suppose to taste like coffee. Perhaps, because its Nikka COFFEY Grain Whisky they believe it's suppose to taste like coffee. It's made from corn and there is no coffee involved in it's production. The word Coffey is referring to the still that is used to produce it, still patented by Aeneas Coffey in 1830. So stop trying to sound like pretentious twits and just enjoy one of the best sipping whiskies there is.

Not good

Not sure what is going on, is it the barrel variation or is it my taste but this is far from enjoyable especially at that price. Very little nose, raw alcohol, a bit of barrel smokiness, not a quality bourbon like but rather fresh wood one. Some after taste with a coffee and overpowering sweetness but nothing to make this interesting. Even coffee taste is more like pale cheap one and not like Brazilian one with full of life and character. After alcohol wears off ,strange as this is 45% , bitter coffee is still on the palette and I really cannot feel anything more but sweetness , maybe a hint of vanilla and citrus ,some orange¿. Very disappointed as Nikki black was quite enjoyable experience.
Adding few drops of water helps taming the alcohol harsh sent. Coffee taste becomes more prominent when sipping, still alcohol on the palette . Still unpleasant after taste and this time sweetness stays longer.

Uber smooth. A cross between a single malt and a bourbon. Notes of chocolate, caramel, and espresso. Seems like the issue with the Nikka NAS single malts that replaced the age statements is so many people loved the age statements and have not compared 10/12/15/20 yr olds to NAS in blind tastings, seeing how many people like the coffey malt, coffey grain, and nikka from the barrel.

I always have one in my bar

A fantastic late evening whisky. One of my favourites

3rd November 2017

male ..molto male...deludente,dolciastro,ricorda il bourbon, molto ma molto caro per quello che vale

24th October 2017

I am seriously impressed....

One of the smoothest...wonderfully creamy across the palate.

15th October 2017

Maybe it's me, but I've never tasted anything like it.

Wonderfully smooth. My new favorite.

7th September 2017

Great whisky

Hard to find here but worth the effort .

22nd March 2017

Great japanese whisky

I absolutely love this whisky. Everytime i pour a dram it's a new emotion. Seriously this is great

25th January 2017

I loved it

A friend brought some over for Christmas dinner and I fell in love! It's a little sweet but not in a bad way. Great smooth flavor

31st December 2016

Not great

This stuff isn't horrible but it isn't what I would call great

18th November 2016

Goes well with Helen Merrill with Clifford Brown

It reminds you of some coffee liqueur you made your date lovelier, but it tastes far more refined. I usually go for Islay single malt, but this one moved me into a different direction, or, destination. But the ultimate destination stays the same: Helen Merrill with Clifford Brown. A fabulous whiskey, a fabulous night of music.

2nd November 2016

The biggest problem with this whisky is running out of it. Fabulous stuff

25th May 2016

Not unpleasant but not particularly exciting. No stand out flavours. Enyoyed the glass I tried would drink it again if it was going bit wouldn't pay for it. Too much taste of raw alcohol aswel....meh

30th April 2016

Very disapointed

No complexity, no flavor, to much taste of alcool, nothing stay in mouth, very disapointed for the price it costs. I advise you a NiKKA black much much better, my favorit one

2nd February 2016

One of the best nosing whiskies!

A very well rounded whisky with notes of raisins, apricot, vanilla and toffee, yet without the lingering taste of honey. Extremely smooth, with an oily viscous texture that coats the mouth. Hard to come by in my region, but certainly worth the wait.

9th January 2016

The smokeiness was okay, but the overall flavor was way off. Barf! Also, burping afterwards is the worse part.

31st December 2015

Sweet with a lovely finish

I tasted this tonight for the first time. The first taste was sweet, honey-like, but not at all cloying. Notes of vanilla, toffee flavors. I sipped it neat and enjoyed it totally. It does not have the bite of a bourbon, rather a smooth finish more like a sweet Scotch. I can drink this regularly with pleasure.

5th December 2015

OK, not more

First of all - it is not single malt. It reminds me bourbon,as Four Roses (Single barrel), but it is more subtle. Sweet vanilla, corn.
As for me it is ok to drink with some meal (meat) not as digestive.

30th October 2015

A surprise in a bottle

I was drinking this strait for a bit when the flavor started to fall off. I started adding a cube of ice to cool it down and add some water and the flavor opened up and all the subtle flavors came out. I recommend this as an introduction to Japanese Whiskeys. I would definitely get this one again!

16th July 2015

Great Whiskey!

Really surprised by the taste- strong toffee flavor- smooth, slightly viscous.
