Nikka Red Bottling Note

Pure Malt Red is a Japanese blended malt in a charming looking bottle! This is made up of malt whisky from the Nikka distilleries Yoichi and Miyagikyo. The result is a fruit, creamy, buttery, and slightly herbal whisky.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Of the three Pure Malts, this is the fruity, clean and easy-going one. The nose is clean, fruity and quite nutty. It reminds us of that old American favourite – peanut butter and jelly on toast.

Palate: Great fruitiness, buttery and clean with hints of cut herbs, sugar and spice.

Finish: The finish is good, with wonderful balance and not a step wrong as it fades away gracefully on sweet, soft malt and fruit.

Reviews for Nikka Pure Malt Red
Dark horse
Of the Pure Malt range, the Red being the most floral and fruity, the white being peated and the black being somewhere between the two. Since Jim Murray’s review, the black shit up to £100 a bottle and has since disappeared. The Red however is still very much attainable and is quintessentially Japanese in its flavour profile. A tremendous effort and for £40/bottle it’s underpriced and quite frankly, underrated.

Very neutral drink. Not unpleasant but would not go out of my way to get it again.

smooth, creamy dram
A Good well balanced whisky. nose is fresh and fruity; a little water opens the oranges and smooths further. a lovely finish, with more orange peel.
i prefer this to "by the barrel" by a distance. not cheap for a 50cl bottle but i must say this is the first japanese whisky i really like(with the water especially)

Good whisky
The chaps at master of malt are spot on with their tasting notes on this one. At first taste you get that spice but the finish is wonderfully fruity.
After only recently discovering Japanese whisky this certainly is a drinkable enough dram and for the price is very reasonable.

Japanese whisky always seems to be peated, well this is the least peated of the lot! It has a strong nose, but is light in palate and taste, smooth, with a refreshing, fading finish that is not overpowering, but light, gentle and short, you soon want more and with a small bottle you can end up finishing it very quickly. I actually preferred it to the Yamazaki 18 which is far more prized and expensive!
