The oldest expression from the 2014 release of Mortlach single malt Scotch whiskies is their 25 Year Old. Mortlach use whisky matured mostly in refill American oak casks, aged for a quarter of a century before bottling the whisky into these remarkably designed bottles. Along with the Rare Old, the 18 Year Old and the travel retail exclusive Special Strength, there's now a handsome selection of Mortlach single malts to enjoy - quite a contrast to years previous, when official bottlings were few and far between.
Vanilla pods, pineapple, lemon zest and a warming hint of tobacco. Touches of crushed almond. Wafts of light oak develop and grow gloriously rich.
Dark chocolate, oak spice and dried fruits. Baking spices grow on the mid palate, building a rich core alongside the fragrant oak. Subtly herbal further on.
Sweet, drying notes, highlighted by cocoa and oak spice.

Was so excited to try this. My shop had recommended a bottle of the Gordon & McPhail Mortlach 25 and I almost inhaled that bottle -- a fascinating, complex, and long meaty finish Mortlach. I had also enjoyed the 22 year old That Boutique-y Whisky Company's Mortlach, as well. I was really hoping the OB 25 would be all of both of those and more. So I decided to try a 3cl sample. Relatively speaking, I was disappointed. It was smooth, lovely but almost quiet and refined. An armchair in a club; elegant but faded. And a short finish (not much more to say about it than to say it was smooth and short; oak spice as the notes above state are right.) But not, for me, a "beast". The G&M was a beast, not this. Glad I tried it and I have to give it a 5 simply because is elegantly smooth and has that lovely Mortlach mix of fullness, chocolate and herbs. But for my money, I'd go for other Mortlachs -- heck, you can get two bottles of either of those for one of these.

Mortlach 25 is more for connoisseurs who have that acquired taste for the finest and the richest.A fine mate that goes well with the finest cigars. AnExcellent dram for those meaty whisky enthusiast. Truly herbal to the nose oily,fruity, oaky, smokey on the palate.An excellent finish of forest organics, overwhelming,exquisite good to the last drop.A five star treat for those in search of finest luxury.
