Michter's US*1 Whiskey

This American whiskey from Michter's Distiller in Louisville, Kentucky, is matured in barrels which had previously held bourbon. As such, this expression cannot be called bourbon, as bourbon needs to be matured in new American oak barrels - hence why it's called whiskey instead. Slightly confusing legal nomenclature aside, it's bloomin' marvellous!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Polished oak, buttery corn and a kick of caraway spiciness.

Palate Wonderfully creamy on the palate, boasting notes of butterscotch, golden syrup and sultanas.

Finish Corn appears again, with peach and apple alongside it.

Reviews for Michter's US*1 Unblended American Whiskey
On the fence.
It’s delightful on the nose, too much vanilla rendering a one dimensional flavor. It’s Bourbon plain & simple. And it’s indistinguishable from Michter’s other expressions. In any case, it’s not bad. But once the bottle I have evaporates- I probably won’t buy another.

Ok
Just finishing up my bottle, probably will not replace it. I like it, but it’s to low proof, would be a hit if it was 100 proof or higher.

So good
Smooth, sweet, absolutely delicious!

Meh.
I'm not convinced. It's nice, but it sacrifices smoothness for depth. A pleasant sweetness, but the mouthfeel is quite thin (even watery), and the flavour is pretty one-dimensional. The nose is very nice, and the first sip is lovely ... but there's nothing much more that comes of it. And, strangely, the flavour profile feels a bit 'cool', rather than the typical warming roundness one would expect from the style. It's smooth, but it's kind of bland, nor anything particularly distinctive, which makes me think you're mostly paying for the hyped brand name. Disappointing, for the price. There are loads of better options at this price point in the US bourbon/rye market.

Great whiskey
If you're not a fan of 'deep vanilla notes' then, yeah, you'll probably not be a fan of this. However that's what this 'whiskey' is all about and it really shouldn't come as a surprise, or reason to mark it down.
It's beautiful warm and inviting, sweet and a nice lasting burn.
I've been excited to try this since reading about it, and I'm not disappointed.

Great whiskey!

Fantastic!
This whisky is fantastic. I´m still a newbie, but from what I´ve tasted so far, this is overall the best one I tried. The nose is superb, with aroma of caramel, toffee, honey and vanilla. The palate is not as sweet and the finish is long. It gave some fight initially, but although not being the smoothest whisky I´ve ever tried, this is overall a superb offering for the price.

Best American whiskey
Super friendly with butterscotch and vanilla, a perfect gateway whiskey.

Dangerously smooth...
Wow, this stuff is seriously drinkable. Most of what you'd expect from a bourbon (like substance...) on the nose but goes down like easiest of easy drinking Irish whiskies. Superb.

So much vanilla
This may just be my taste, but all I get from this whiskey is an overpowering punch of vanilla. It's very smooth, but I haven't been able to find any of the other notes my nose picks up on, which is very pleasant.

If you like smooth, sweet, and vanilla, you'll probably love this. I just wanted less vanilla with a touch of spice...or anything else to balance it out.

Second to NONE
Excellent nose with hints of Werther's candies and caramel. Amazing palate that confirms the notes caught by the nose followed by a delightful, smooth finish. Will be buying more and looking forward to trying the other whiskies in Michter's line-up!
