“Been exploring more amarican whiskeys lately. Bourbons, Ryes and single malts. So hard to find value for money beyond the standard supermarket shelfers... Until now. This is phenomenal. Especially for the price. Delighted to find some more bottles available after the initial out of stock disappointment. 2 back ups ordered immediately. For anyone interested - my guess is this is MGP rye (95% rye 5% malted barley) distilled in indiana. Absolute banger. Everything you want in a rye. Grassy, herbatious, sweet vanillas. Lip smackingly good. Keep it coming MoM! ”

Description

An American rye whiskey joins our own Master of Malt collection. Distilled in 2019, this whiskey spent six years maturing in a new charred oak barrel, yielding 391 bottles when it was opened in 2025 (without added colour or chill filtration, naturally). With layers of toasted pecans, sweet oak, and balanced spice, it's a rounded, mellow sipper, and ought to shine in a Manhattan.

And before you ask, the mash bill is in the high rye style: 95% rye, 5% barley.

Nose

Earthy roasted nuts and shells, vanilla hazelnut latte, woody notes of cloves and barky spice, then sweet caramel and butterscotch with a touch of cocoa powder.

Palate

Soft and buttery to begin, with silky caramel opening the way for balanced rye spice. Buttered pumpernickel, fresh leather, roasted pecans, and sweet yet earthy oak.

Finish

Drying oak, chewy toffee, cherry cola, rye crackers, a moment of peppercorn heat, tamed by malt loaf, and hints of bitter cacao.

Outstanding bottling

I'm bias towards American bourbon and rye (although I do have a varied collection and enjoy Scotch and Irish) - drinking a lot of rye lately and decided to give this a go as a first Masters bottling purchased - what a banger. I got it delivered and opened it, and it was so good I straight away ordered another two back up bottles. Lots going on and a great sipper. It's not heavy into the minty rye, but so enjoyable. It's a steal at the price, definitely one to have and try.

Surprised me

I thought I didn’t particularly like high rye whisky but I really wanted to try a master of malt independent bottling. This was a treat, has those traditional rye notes but so smooth and is now all gone so I guess another bottle is needed. Think you don’t like rye, try this
