The first line extension to the Maker's Mark range since the '50s, Maker's 46 is essentially the standard wheated expression with added spice. This bourbon wasn't intended to compete with the core expression, instead it's a cousin to it, something different for those that enjoy the extra dimension provided by inserting seared French oak staves into the barrels (with the stave profile "number 46" - thus the name). It's utterly stunning.
Toffee sweetness and the saw dust from freshly cut wood. Has a very toasty aroma, with sweet spices and deep, thick caramel.
Creamy and very soft. Then it opens up, in fact it explodes with spiciness which concentrates on the tip of the tongue. It’s on nutmeg, mulled wine spices, allspice, cinnamon. Also a hint of hot apple juice.
A natural progression of the palate with the sweet spices and it concentrates on the tongue – this may be one of the few times you’ll notice a concentration of sweetness like this from a bourbon. It also becomes grassy after a minute or so.
I really love this 46. It is my go to Bourbon.
Sampled this in The Devils Advocate, Edinburgh. Benefits from a few drops of water. Light spice on the nose , subtle bite on the tip of the tongue. Warm aftertaste.
This is a strongly wheated bourbon, which is significant if you don't like that kind of thing. Turns out, I do not like that kind of thing. One of the few whiskies I've ever tried that I didn't want to finish. If you like what the wheat brings to the mash party, then you'll likely love this.
I think the description on this web site is accurate. However, there are much more enjoyable bourbons for the money and for even less money. It is a drier slightly more spicy version of the regular Marker's. But, it is still over-rated.
Very good. It's now my favorite go to bourbon. It's what a bourbon should taste like.
