Rare stuff indeed. This was distilled at Mannochmore from 1996 to '97. This 10 year old is known as "The Black Whisky", so named for its very dark appearance. The producers attribute the colour to the use of double charred casks. Perhaps there's a drop or two of spirit caramel in the equation. Regardless, this is quite a collectible, even if it's not particularly well-regarded by critics.

    First Off the Shelf

I bought a bottle of this when it first appeared on the shelf of the Off licence (well actually it was the NAAFI in Germany in the 90s and Im sure it was a pre release special offer). It took me about 18 years to drink the bottle. It happened to be the most disgusting filth I have ever tasted. I kept it A. In the hope that I could grow to like it and B. to give to guests as an example of a minging whisky. It tasted like sweet burned black treacle with extra soot.I tried it neat with ice. I mixed it with : water, coca cola, lemonade, fruit juice etc , port, gin, and various better whiskies. No amount of mixing could get rid of the awfulness. It poisoned everything. I tried it as a foot rub for my athletes foot. It seemed to feed the disease. I finally choked down the last f=dregs in a vain attempt to free up some cupboard space for a better whisky. Unfortunately I replaced it with equal awfulness in the form of Auchentoshan, but thats another sad tale.

    Still have a bottle

i once shared a botle with a friend loved it then had a bottle brought for me which is still unopened and kept in a dark place. Now undecided whether to neck it or keep it unopened, i love it pity its no longer made thanks to the concerns of the namby pambies

    Absolutely wonderful

A friend of mine gave me a glass last night and I have never tasted such a deliciously rich, complex malt. Smooth and extraordinary, burnt toffee, sherry and loads more. And now I find it was only made for two years! What a tragedy.

    Tastes like newly tanned leather

This had a very unusual flavor, after letting it breath for about 30 minutes it had lots of burnt caramel flavors and the aroma of new leather, reminding me of the smell of riding a brand new saddle strapped on your horse for the first time. The flavors are very complex and unforgettable. This is one of the only single malts that I can clearly recall tasting, the flavors hitting my pallet and the distinct aroma. Very memorable. I would try this if you ever get a chance, it has not been produced since 1999, and becoming quite scarce.
