Lagavulin (SR 2018) Bottling Note

The Diageo Special Releases welcomes back the Lagavulin 12 for 2018. This is the 15th incarnation of the Islay single malt, which has only missed the very first edition in 2002. The limited release was matured in refill American Oak hogsheads and bottled at 57.8% ABV.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: A classic Lagavulin – smouldering barbeque smoke, oodles of citrus peels, raspberry and peach. It's quite green, with a freshly cut grass vibe in there too. Then there's a wet wood aroma to keep it interesting.

Palate: Bonfire embers give way to hay, orange peel, toffee apples and salted caramel. Burned marshmallows, dark chocolate and cigar smoke, too.

Finish: Drying with bitter orange and wood smoke.

Overall: A deliciously smoky yet multi-dimensional whisky. We like. A lot.

Lagavulin 12 Year Old (Special Release 2018) Reviews

Overpriced, but so dang good:)

Overpriced......but so dang good:) You get all of the delicious bourbon notes of citrus rinds and vanilla! Then you get the sweet and salty smoke followed by the umami/savory goodness that makes Lagavulin truly special, with bouillon cubes/chicken noodle soup broth.

For those who can't afford Uigeadail for everyday.

Less smokey and stronger in alcohol percentage than the mainstream Lagavulin whiskeys.Way better head in the morning than the 16-year old products of the company.

Something Special

Just opened the bottle of 12 year, very peety and different from the norm. The more I sip the more I like. Kind of amazing how they can capture all the flavors that make this Scotch so very distinct. Heres to you Lagavulin, sip, sip. This is special and I feel honored to have acquired a bottle. Good for me. Sip, sip.

Bad moonshine

Undrinkable. Tastes like bad moonshine with a hint of peet. I’m trying to return it to the crook who sold it to me.

With Specific reference to the 2018 release.

Recently tried the 2018 release in my local whisky bar. With regret it’s not as good as the 2015 or 2017 releases and is £20 more expensive. Two stars seems fair in my view. When you look at other peated cask strength whisky offering around, this is poor value. I would recommend looking elsewhere. For example, the ledaig 13 Amontillado is sublime @ £70 and the Glen Scotia Ruby Port @ £50 represents truely epic quality/value ratio. However, in Lagavulins defence, the Lagavulin 8 restores my faith in them. What a whisky. Its like a junior Lagavulin 12 and at £45-£50 represents a fantastic alternative to the hideously overpriced Lagavulin 12 2018.

Deliciously different this year...5 and a half stars!

To all those moaning about the price below, it is partly due to the rarity - it's a limited release, and I don;t mind paying a bit more for that reason. It's still at the cheaper end of Diego's Special Releases, and consistently outstanding. OK, so you can get the 2017 for less and I too remember paying £50 for the 12...10 years ago! Whisky, like everything else, gets more expensive. Sure, if the price puts you off go buy two 8 or 16 year olds...they're both great. So what prompted me to go for this 2018 bottling? Simply, I was given a sample as a Christmas present by Lagavulin's inimitable and generous ambassador. I tried it last night, and immediately it jumped out as a different beast to other years, with an extra sweetness and richness that gives it some more complexity IMO, beyond the usual dry, maritime flavours I associate with the 12, but still retaining them. I thought" That's my Xmas malt!"

excellent as always

Any idiotic comment below that is not specifically about the 2018 release should be deleted and the reviewers banned from buying from this site to teach them a lesson. I could care less that you do not like the price. That is your problem not mine, go somewhere else and polute with your idiotic diatribe.

Top drawer scotch at a reasonable price

I also think that, though expensive, Lagavulin 12 is absolutely worth it. I agree completely with the editor's review and can't add to it. We had a group drinking it last night and everybody agreed it is quite special.

Stop being idiots!

Something that really annoys me on this site is how people review a whisky that they have never sampled based on the price. Even some of the reviews here from people who have (apparently) tasted the whisky are reviewing on price, not quality. This seems to be symptomatic of social media these days whether the uninformed like to shout opinions loudly. If you want to make a point, don't add a star rating! I remember this idiocy effecting the Bowmore Devils Cask III reviews. in particular where people were horrified by the price of this (fantastic) whisky. I understand the concerns over value, but DON'T REVIEW (or at least add stars), if you haven't drunk. Personally I stopped buying the fantastic Lag 12 range in 2016 because of the continued price increases. However with the £20 discount I've bought one as a Xmas present for myself. Review the whisky and let others decide if they want to pay the premium price. Otherwise just comment!

Not Worth The Money - Avoid!

They were more than pushing it when they were asking £70 - £80 for the Lagavulin Special Release but £109.95 is way over the value of this whisky, being a Lagavulin fan I stupidly bought some in the hope it would somehow be something extra special which they have bottled this year, it is no better than previous years and it is certainly not worth the asking price. That is Lagavulin now off my list of drinking whisky, a total rip off.

Too expensive for what you get

Idiot price for what you get. Quality gets lower and lower and price higher and higher. Not reccommended...

Just not worth what they are asking

I've had 3 different releaes of Lagavulin 12. They've all been stellar whiskies and are my favourite in the Lagavulin range. I currently have a bottle of the 2015 edition open.

However, the price increases have been shocking. To increase the price by £20 of an already overpriced whisky is disgraceful from Diageo.

There's better whisky out there for cheaper.

To 'Well Worth It'

Reviews are also there to help people gauge if it's good value for money. Is over a 100% increase in cost in less than ten years not worth highlighting?

Terrible value for money

Currently drinking this in the pub. I came onto look at the price after the pub charging alot more than I would usually pay. Lagavulin 12 is a great whisky but at this price, wow, poor value for money. Must be the same diageo employee that came up with Mortlach Rare and Old that came up with this new price point.

12th October 2018

Well Worth It

I came to see what was wrong with this Scotch after seeing a rating of 2/5 stars and... I get 4 reviewers complaining about prices? I can see the price and decide if I want to pay it, all by myself. Reviews are there to help other buyers know the PRODUCT!!

Overpriced but great stuff

First up, yeah, it's overpriced. But my friend bought it for me, so don't really care!
That out of the way, I loved it. Very Ardberg 10-ish but somewhat different as well.
Peaty and very earthy. Almost like petrichor. A bit grassy. Then intertwines with big smoky notes first and then fruity sweetness. Not so much citrusy, but a little bit of peach? I hate watery thin whiskies and this is not one of them. Oily thick mouthfeel that I love. The finish is bittersweet and astringent. Net-net, really like...somewhere between Ardberg 10 and Lag 16, with more complexity than the Lag 8 ( which is also great).

Another price hike

Don’t get me wrong, this is in my humble opinion the best 12 year old whisky on the planet. I rate it that highly. However £20 more expensive than last years leaves a rather sour taste in my mouth. At £110 a bottle I can buy two Laphroaig 10 CS or two bottles of Lagavulin 8. It’s hard to justify the annual purchase of the 12 this year. I’ll have to console myself by opening the 2017
Edition that’s currently sitting in the cabinet. (Incidentally, widely available at £89 currently) snap them up soon you lag 12 fans

20th September 2018

Much too expensive

Far too expensive

19th September 2018

Over priced

Shocking price for a 12 year old. Won’t be buying for that fact.
